Got a Nook!

Thanks for all the information about the Nook. I am a school librarian and use my public library for almost all my reading. I hardly ever buy books. I have a Kindle that I get to use as long as I work in my school district. However, I hardly ever want to buy books for it. I'd rather just borrow from the library. My other concern I found is that when I took my Kindle to the beach this year, I didn't want to leave it to go into the water. I was afraid it would get stolen. So I ended up just taking my sack of books instead. Also, the Kindle doesn't show illustrations like for picture books. Does the Nook?

plus, I think the nook is the only one that has the library book functionality, that's what made the decision for me.

I'm thinking of getting them for the kids for bday presents. I have been reading constantly since I got it. Can't say enough good things about it.

Sony is also compatible with the library. I bought the Pocket e-reader for that reason and love it!

I have had mixed results with pictures. It depends upon the book.

the only difference I could was the connectivity, if you want to be able to download books over 3g. For me, it didn't matter since I'd be mostly doing library books so I got just the wifi one

I have the Kindle and love it. I didn't like the touch screen on the nook, and the screen is better (IMHO) on the Kindle. Better contrast. Also, not all libraries support epub books to download, and mine does not. Also, the lending feature of the nook is a joke. You can only lend a book once and it is only for 14 days. So that wouldn't sway me away from the kindle. I think it depends what you want to read and if it is available for your device. Another thing to keep in mind is the customer service for the Kindle vs the Nook... Amazon has set up a special CS Center for the Kindle, and they will pretty much replace any Kindle once in the first year. I have heard horror stories of people trying to get good CS from B&N....

I screwed up initially when I downloaded the books from the library. Now I have to wait 20 days until they expire before I can fix the problem and take out new ones, arghh.
this board should get a cut of the profits for all the free advertising the Nook is getting, lol

abmitch - just curious. Can you not return a book early on your Adobe Digital Editions? I know you can with mine but perhaps some libraries disable that somehow.

This is how I do it....
Go to the list view of books and highlight the book in question. Over on the left there is a little arrow pointing down. Click on that and one of the options is "Return Borrowed Item." When I do that it frees up one of my slots to check something else out.

Thank you for telling us how to return ebooks, I just did it and it worked!! I have had my nook since 7/1 my husband surprised me for our anniversary. I love it! Does anyone know if different libraries offer different ebook titles. Want to know if it is worth getting a library card to a different cities library for more book options.

Yep, love my Nook :)
The ability to borrow library books is what tipped over the scale between Kindle and Nook.
I looked at Sony and absolutely didn't like the look of it. Can't tell you why.

I am too cheap to buy the covers so I made 2 covers the past couple of days.
Can't believe how much those covers cost.
By the time I found cheaper covers online I figured I could make them myself with some leftover craft materials I have at home.
So now I have 2 covers almost for free... :)

How neat. I am not creative, so I got the hard plastic sleeve thingy from barnes and noble for mine. I don't like the covers because I think the Nook is perfect feel without them. but the sleeve protects it when traveling and stuff.

I know what you mean by protection. That's the reason why I made the covers. Too worried that I'd somehow scratch the screen or something while carrying it in my purse.
Here are the DIY covers I made:

I just wished I had it when I was still working/traveling years ago. It would've saved me a lot of $ and time while I was in the airports/planes.

BTW, for all you new nook owners. If you haven't bought a warranty and are interested in it. Check out square trade. They have excellent coverage for a LOT cheaper than BB/BN. And great reviews.
I bought a 3 yr coverage including accidental stuff (water, drop, etc.) for $28.
Look around for a code, I think there is a 30% one out there now. I got mine with a 40% code.

I LOVE this! So cute & creative! You could seriously sell these, I'd buy one (if I had a Nook!)

I use the B&N eReader app on my iPod Touch - will have to try the trick of searching for "0.00" to find free books on there.

I tried downloading a book from my library, but couldn't figure out a way to get it onto my iPod. Anyone know of a way to do this? I have the B&N app & the Stanza app on my iPod for reading. My library has e-books in Adobe EPUB, Adobe PDF, & Mobipocket.

I got the cheap $8 cover in the mail from Amazon today, I like it. Well padded and slim. I also got 2 other cases from the same brand for the same price- Case Crown for when I buy them for the kids. They were all nice.

I bought the screen protector at B and N, wish I'd waited, they are like $5 on ebay.

I haven't tried to put library books on my iphone, if you figure it out, would you post it?

Thanks Ava!
There are already so many nook cases on etsy so I figured I'm too late in the game hehe...

I just put on a skin I bought on ebay. It covers all the white part. I guess it will protect from scratches but probably isn't really necessary. But the cute patterns are fun!

It depends on the libraries and where you are- the libraries pay for that service for you, just like they pay for the physical books, so they may be limited in what they offer. You could always check out their website and see if you can get a guest account, or go to the library in person and have one of the library staff walk you through their ebook site. Definitely ask and make sure that their options are compatible with your reader- not all options are.

You might also want to make sure that the library you want to join doesn't charge you for membership- for some libraries, if you're outside their "service area", they may charge you to be a member. The library I work for doesn't, but the Dallas Public Library does charge those who don't live in Dallas to use their system, which would include ebook services.

:goodvibes

I noticed the Philly library has about 3x the titles my library has, I'm thinking it will be worth the $15 to join

I just bought mine today! I was considering it for a while and reading this thread convinced me to get it. I can't wait to charge it and start downloading my books!

have fun!

I'm loving the skin I bought for it. It looks so pretty with this modern floral pattern.
