Are GoPros fairly simple to use? I just ordered a waterproof GoPro for my upcoming cruise, after someone here mentioned she used one on her cruise; however, I'm horrible when it comes to technology. I'm hoping it will be VERY simple to operate, view and save video clips from our cruise. Any basic tips? Nothing fancy, I just want to capture some great memories on video of DS enjoying our 1st Disney cruise. TIA

We bought a GoPro for our first cruise, and we LOVE it. It depends on which model you got, but in general, yes, they're very simple to use. Just spend a little bit of time getting familiar with it before your trip, so that you know what each button does, and you have a feel for how it films. I second the advice of having a spare battery (or two - they're pretty cheap, and if you have a model with WiFi, the battery can go down fast if you leave the WiFi on), as well as the charger that charges two batteries at a time. Also, we found that a 64GB memory card was plenty large enough to last us on our 3 night cruise, with room to spare. Other accessories I would recommend specifically for cruises are the yellow floaty handle (for use in the water), and the head mount (for filming going down the Aqua Duck especially). We bought this accessory kit, which has practically every accessory we'll probably ever need. Our son loved to film parts of our cruise himself too. :)

THANK YOU! This was very informative and extremely helpful!!! I will check out the assessory link you suggested. Thank you. Since the wifi drains the battery, is it possible to film without the wifi on or do I just need to remember to turn it off each time after filming? I didn't get an expensive GoPro, since I'm so challenged with technology and I probably wouldn't know how to use a really advanced one. I just wanted a basic waterproof GoPro. I think I ordered the F39?

Some thoughts...
  • another vote for a second battery. Personally I purchase the Brunton all day battery. It's heavier and not waterproof.
  • how do you plan to use the camera? there is no image stabilization. The best videos are the ones that are not shaky.
  • there is no built in screen. You use wifi, but the wifi drains the battery quicker.
  • there is no optical zoom

Ok I think you may have ordered a Chinese GoPro clone. GoPro doesn't designate its products as F39. I mention this since that camera will be different operationally than a real GoPro. So any advice you may get may not apply. With that being said I love my GoPro. It isn't perfect. It doesn't like low light and the battery life is less than stellar. I love giving my little kids the camera and experiencing events through their eyes. Here is a video I made with our GoPro.

Very interesting thread! Only a tad off topic, but after our last trip to Maui during Humpback season, I promised myself I would not go back without a GoPro for our many whale watches. The footage people have gotten with their GoPro's is fabulous!

ExCMBeau, how would one determine a "Chinese" go pro from a real GoPro?

I must say I am intimidated by even going into best buy because they look so confusing to operate. Did a particular model catch your eye?
Hubby was looking at the GoPro Black. He liked that it has more frames per second or something like that and that slow mo mode was better and that it would look good on our 4K tv. Something like that cause I really have no idea honestly about techie stuff! But I see such cool videos of people's trips and snorkeling and going down the slide and it's just awesome looking! Plus I can use it when running our races and mud runs!!

I guess I will bite the bullet one day and go investigate. Will you be bringing a DSL camera as well?

GoPro classes their camera with a number then a color. For instance mine is a GoPro Hero3+ Silver. The new GoPro Hero4 Silver is what most people buy unless you have a need for 4K. If you need 4K then go for the black series. The Silver comes with a screen so you can see what you are filming, but at the costs of battery life. Anyhow check out their website http://shop.gopro.com/cameras . If you do a search for F39 camera you will get results that show this camera. http://img.banggood.com/images/upload/2014/07/SKU149627 (7).jpg That is clearly not a GoPro brand camera. Hope this helps.

Let me see if I can help those who seem intimidated by GoPro cameras since I sell them in the dive shop I work pt for.
The 2 most popular are the silver and black. They are 100 difference in price With the black being highest at 499. Silver is 399. The silver comes standard with a lcd backpack built in and the black does not. For the black it's an option. Both come with built in wifi and can be controlled by the phone app.
The black has a higher frame per second settings that the silver doesnt. What this translates to is how jerky a slow motion video or portion of a video looks. The higher the fps the smoother the video.
The black also has a higher resolution of 4k in the video side. What this means is how clear a video is when played back on ultra high def tvs or screens.
the one down side of the 4 k video is that if you don't have a fast enough laptop or computer processor the video will skip when played back on a computer screen or monitor. The newest update on the computer apps is supposed to have fixed that.
For the average person the silver is the better of the 2. If you like to play with videos do editing things like that, post right to social media things like that the black is the better of the 2.
For both cameras you can set the default to either video or pictures with minimal effort. Depending on what I'm doing I usually set mine to default to video.
The most basic acessories for the cameras I would suggest is at least 2 more batteries and a dual battery charger. Both cameras come with a waterproof case out of the box and also open backs to allow better sound recording. If you plan on doing a lot of dry events like parades and shows I would suggest a frame also since it allows the most sound through to the recording.

Lots of great advice here!

I'm so glad you were able to put a stop to the fake gopro. Buy yours on Amazon or right from the gopro website.

My website is ********.com and I have a post on "which gopro should I buy": http://********.com/which-gopro-to-buy-for-a-family-camera

In short, I highly recommend the hero 4 silver edition.

Here I also talk about the best accessories to take on vacation: http://********.com/best-gopro-accessories-to-take-on-vacation

It's fairly easy to use but I definitely recommend playing with it ahead of time so you're not stuck missing fun moments on the cruise trying to monkey with it.

Let me know if you have questions or need help!

Thank you! I just signed up for your email. I use my GoPro for automotive sports and realized I could use it for family stuff only recently.
