Today, Chef Mickeys and Goofy’s Kitchen are nearly identical concepts. My first visit to Chef Mickey’s was for my 14th birthday, literally days after it opened (in time for the Holiday season) in December 1995. It seems like in the 29 years since (wow, am I that old?) there have been only minor updates.

Meanwhile, we went to Goofy’s Kitchen around the same time. I do not recall Goofy’s Kitchen being a similar concept until after it moved its current location in 1999. It was a buffet and had characters, but the buffet was more adult-like and I don’t remember the color antics. Am I off here? Anybody with a better memory share some details?

For those who didn’t know… Goofy’s Kitchen opened in 1990 in the “Restaurant Row” section of the DLH. It was a low-level replacement for Country Kitchen, which was an Italian buffet. In 1999, Goofy’s Kitchen relocated to its present spot, replacing Stromboli’s.

Chef Mickey’s opened in the Contemporary in December 1995. It was the reimagining of a longstanding buffet restaurant that featured characters in its final years. The name “Chef Mickey’s” had previously been used at a restaurant in the now-Disney Springs, but it was a totally different concept (an upscale establishment that began featuring solely Mickey in 1990).

I remember eating at the original Goofy's Kitchen for the very first time during Christmas 1998 and it was a great place to have a chance to meet every character you could name without going to the parks in a special character experience for lots of people. But when Goofy's Kitchen moved to it's current location in Disneyland Hotel you could tell that this move would be the start of their current image. For one thing I cannot figure out why people say Goofy's Kitchen is pricier than other character dining restaurants when today the only characters they have now is The Fab Five and when Goofy's Kitchen was in it's original location and even at it's current location people used to be able to meet a variety of characters from Alice from Alice In Wonderland The Mad Hatter Snow White Baloo and Aladdin And Jasmine. But once they stopped the character variety the prices for character breakfasts at Goofy's Kitchen skyrocketed high and people were disappointed at this new image. Because Goofy's Kitchen was known for having character variety and I don't know why they quit the character variety format. What Disneyland Hotel should do is create another restaurant with the same format as Goofy's Kitchen and add character breakfast lunches and dinners along with a wonderful character show and it would be a big hit if the restaurant were to exist
