Looking to begin to invest in lenses for the above body. Mainly shoot handheld-- primarily candids, lots of children and pets, some landscape. I love to photograph our vacations, hikes etc.
Different lenses for each of those things!
Candids and some portraits -- The Tamron 17-50 2.8 would be a good pick.
Portraits, where you actually get those kids and pets to pose -- The Nikon 50 1.8 or the Nikon 85 1.8. The 50 *can* be great for indoor candids as the 1.8 aperture would let you shoot quickly without flash, but the focal length may get a little long.
So really, ideal for indoor candids, low light photography -- the Nikon 35 1.4. But I don't love the short focal length for portraits.
I just fell in love with my new lens for portraits -- It's 85mm 2.8. Great focal length for portraits:

The Tamron 17-50 2.8 is a nice lens in that it covers a lot of those situations, but won't do it quite as well as the prime lenses.
Landscape -- Again, the Tamron 17-50 can cover it pretty well. Though some people really prefer to go even wider. Take a look at Tom Bricker's blog for wide angle recommendations for the Nikon.
Hikes-- Depends what you want to capture. But the Tamron can give you a nice range. If you want to capture birds and wildlife on your hike, you will want a good telephoto. If you want to capture bugs and flowers, you may want to get a macro lens.
Vacations --- Really depends on the type of vacation, and what you want to capture.
