Google Ignores Memorial Day

NewsBusters reader Mr. Snuggles has pointed out something conspicuously absent from Google’s various pages today – any reference to Memorial Day.

I’m sure most Googlers are extremely aware of how Google will dress up its logo at its web search or news pages in honor of holidays or special occasions. Google has been known to do this on Halloween, Valentine’s Day, Christmas, etc. In fact, here is a display of all the Google holiday logos so far this year, and since 1999. You’ll even find that Google celebrated Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s birthday just a week ago. For those scratching their heads, he created Sherlock Holmes.

Yet, if you go to Google’s home page here, or its news page here, you will see nothing commemorating today’s national holiday. By contrast, Google did honor the Persian New Year on March 21, as well as Louis Braille’s birthday on January 4.

Furthermore, if you go back through the Google archives, you'll find that, although it has over the years commemorated Shichi-go-san being celebrated in Japan, Bastille Day in France, and Korean Liberation Day, it appears that Google has never dressed up its logo for Memorial Day.

Why might that be?

I don't know anything about the Google people or whether this was some kind of political statement. I'm not sure that it matters, but it does make me think of the uncomfortable position we pacifists are in on a daily basis. Like the Support Our Troops ribbons. I really do support them, I feel I do, but I've been against the war since before it started. I was told on this board that unless I support the war I can't say I support the troops....Memorial day is just sadness and death to me. I want to thank vets for the sacrifices they made without glorifying war or supporting a war I don't support. It's tricky. According to military families on this board I can't do both.

I don't really care either. Just found it interesting is all.

Maybe Google associates the day with unpleasantness and chose not to commemorate it. Maybe their graphic designer is out. Who knows?

From what I can tell - they haven't acknowledged it in years. But I could be wrong - I'm horribly sleep deprived and I could have passed by it.

Maybe they got tired of being attacked after they put one out for Martin Luther King Jr's b-day? Run a search (if it's working) there were even threads here about it.

Sure... no motivation behind this thread. :rolleyes1 Wouldn't surprise me that they skipped it for the same, but opposite, feelings that likely spawned this thread.

It's also possible that it's simply a holiday they chose to let almost everybody take, including those that make the special changes.

Never thought about it!

Perhaps since GOOGLE is a GLOBAL website, why would they highlight just a American Holiday?

Your speculations are wrong. I simply found this interesting. Sorry to dissapoint you.

They highlight Independence day.

We had a packing party to send C-rats to troops a while ago. My friend organized this and we get together every month or so. One of her best buds assists her. She is vehemently against Bush. Vehemently against the war. But she can put that aside to support the troops to pack boxes and help spread the word and gather supplies for my friends organization.

So one can support troops who are upheld by oath to obey the President of the United States without agreeing for one minute with the orders they have given.

Everyone has their opinion and you can feel and do what you want without being told what you can and cannot do. No human being can tell me my reasons and reasonings... they are my own. I completely believe you can support the troops and the incredible vets of this world WITHOUT caring for a particular war. It's the right we were given and were fought for.

I've been thru several wars in my life and I've always respected the warriors but not necessarily the war. These people are amazing, especially since they do something I could never do. It's like not liking workers for a company you don't like. It's their job and they deserve our respect for doing it.

Sorry, I cannot understand how limited minded some people can be.

What would be in the logo, coffins wrapped in American flags?

Doesn't seem all that uplifting, perhaps they didn't feel inspired........

You're kidding right? A simple American Flag - the very flag that our Vets have fought for would be appropriate. The symble of our country - the country that they died for.

The simble of your country? :rolleyes2

Google's motto is 'do no evil', and so putting up a symbol for Memorial Day, which is associated with war, may not fit into their agenda.

And please don't try to pretend you ddn't want to :stir: with that thread - nobody believes you.

Vik - no pretending here. And I don't care to much what you or anyone else thinks  . I found the article and thought it was interesting. I had no intentions of stirring any pot. That's quite silly as a matter of fact. It's a discussion board - I was interested in hearing what other people thought about it. Or am I not allowed to do that? I guess the woman who posted about attending the Dixie Chicks concert the other day is a pot stirrer too???? Or only the one's who you disagree with? I think the only one stirring the pot right now is you. Like I said in my second post - I really don't care what Google does - I just thought this was interesting. I appologize for my typo btw - 3 hours of sleep can do that sometimes .

I don't think you can speak for everyone here and what they believe!
