Goodbye, Space Mountain (for me anyhow)

It is still a favorite of mine, and I'm over 50. I ride it several times each trip. I have had to limit my rides on upside down roller coasters like Rock N Roller Coaster (and Hulk and Dragon Challenge) to once each trip because they give me a headache.

The up and down ones don't bother me at all. But Space Mountain makes me think that Disney needs to put a "Cairo Practor's" right next to "Auntie Gravity's"

I wish they had that, "Like," button activated. I would click it for this post.

Several years back, I gave up on Space, Everest, ToT, RnR, and Dinosaur. They either hurt my neck/back and/or made me light headed.

I call Space Mountain "the nut cracker". Your legs are wide open and there's this part where you go down a quick drop and get air, and then the first thing to hit the seat is, well just use your imagination.

The nut cracker.

I swore off SM and BTMRR after our last trip. The jerkiness on SM was too much for my neck. BTMRR felt like every disc in my spine was slamming together every time we'd hit a dip, by the second dip I was afraid that I wouldn't be able to walk off that ride at the end much less be able to walk back to the front of the park pushing my daughters wheelchair. Thankfully I was fine but decided it wasn't worth the risk for a couple of minutes of fun.

I have been riding SM since it first opened. The last couple of years I have gotten off and literally have had to take Advil. I thought it was just me -- getting old -- guess not. I won't be riding it anymore unless the change it.

I'm 28 and can barely handle it - it always gives me a headache. I've noticed that sometimes I can get away with it if I sit in the first few rows.

The only way I "ride" Space Mountain anymore is on the PeopleMover (or is it the Tomorrowland Transit Authority?)

My husband and 7 year old did this ride. Neither of them liked it. My husband's complaint was that it was pitch black. The last time that I rode Space Mt, it was dark but I could see the track a little. There were reflectors on the other coasters and some stars etc. My husband said there was none of that. We rode the people mover and when we went through the Space Mt part it was so dark. We couldn't see a thing. We used to see the rocket coasters going on the tracks but we couldn't see any. I know I won't like the ride if you can't even see a little. Why would this be different now?

I know my wife fully agrees with you. I could go either way, but as long as my daughter wants to do it, I will always join her. Hopefully the ride will get DLR's makeover.

Putting in a new track (and I'm not sure DL's was ever just like WDW's, but I don't know) took OVER 2 years at DL. I just really doubt WDW will ever do that.

They really should.

I've actually contacted a chiro in Orlando, one that says he sees tourists, but there are so many hoops to jump through, even I didn't have the vacation time to actually get *help* from him. Crazy.

LOL.

I think I know the part of the ride that was. Last time I went on it (with a friend who had never ridden it and really wanted to) that was the jump where it hit my pelvis in a really bad spot, internal-organs-wise.

Last several years I have gotten several headaches once coming off Space Mountain so I hate going on it, I do get on once with everyone and if they want to ride again I dont! I usually take an ibroprophen about 20 min. before and that helps

I'm a DLR Vet and so I love the Space Mountain there. Much smoother, awesome music and completely dark. The SM @ WDW reminds me of Matterhorn in the semi-dark. It's nice to know I can write off this ride and use a FP+ for something else on my upcoming visit to WDW. ;)

If you ask for a front seat in BTMRR, it can help a bit.

But Mine Train basically ruined BTMRR for me....Mine Train is so smooth, it made me realize how rough BTMRR is!

I also swore off Space Mt. at WDW after one ride on our last trip. It killed my neck and back. Space Mt. at Disneyland, on the other hand, is a totally different ride. I went several times on our trip last month. Not only is it much smoother, but the seats are a lot more comfortable and easier to get in and out of.

If you don't like Space Mt. at WDW, the Matterhorn at DL is similar. After the refurb. a few years ago I gave it another try. It was miserable - bumpy, jerky, uncomfortable. I was so tensed up trying to keep from hitting the sides of the car, that I ended up sore all over. The good news is that some of the nicest benches at DL are right in front of the Matterhorn!

Yeah, I can't do it anymore either. The last time I rode it, it was so jarring that it loosed my ponytail from the hair tie! I thought my head was going to be the next thing loosed!

Thanks, I may just try that on our next trip. BTMRR is one of my favorite rides so I hated giving it up

I'm in this boat, the jerkiness of it plus not being able to be sitting next to my then 5 year old ruined it for me last time. He says he wants to again but I'm hopeful that I can get him to do BTMRR instead

Glad to hear I'm not the only one! Our sons love Space, but my DH and I have sworn it off after 2013 trip. Just so do not like the neck and backache it gives me and DH.

I like it, I just don't like the sounds they added, they freak me out.
I'd be happy if they changed it to be like the DLR one.

I am really really surprised that they have not refurbished it like they did with Space Mountain at Disneyland in California. It is much smoother out here and an all around better ride. They really need to update it at some point.
