My son always rode in a stroller, but this year he will be old enough to walk around the parks. What are the best walking shoes for a 6 year old? What brands have you used that worked well? I like New Balance, but there are so many styles that I don't know what to choose!

Hey there!

I had the same though for my 6 year old. We live in Northern Ireland and are heading over in July. I went for Clarks - not sure if you have them in the US but they're reknowned for being really comfortable. I went and got them properly fitted at a traditional shoe shop as well. Making him 'break them in' too - poor wee lad has been running around in open toed sandels in the freezing cold weather here!!

We paid a bit extra for them but I didn't mind as it's important he's comfy. I also bought myself a Nike pair (no blisters for me!)

Sketchers. My daughter has never had a blister with a new pair of Sketchers.

DS5 (6 in May) got these ones the last time we sneaker shopped:

They fit his feet really well and he wore them straight from the box with no sore feet problems. My only issue is that they tend to come untied a lot, no matter how many "double knots" you tie. I think it has something to do with the laces that come with it. I am going to get him a different pair of laces to wear to Disney and see if that helps the issue.

I will second Sketchers as well. I LOVE Clarks but have never seen them here in the US for kids ..... has anyone else seen kids clarks ?!

New Balance... if you can find some that fit your 6 year old, get New Balance

We bought our 5 and 3 yr old boys Nike's from Stride Rite. They were completely comfy in them on our Feb. trip. I love them because they are light weight, I can't stand heavy shoes for my kids or myself!! I'm going to buy the exact same kind for them again soon. :)

We usually go and get our dd properly fitted at Stride Rite about a month before our trips. We choose a pair with good support that fits her snuggly about the ankle because she has such skinny feet she always gets ankle blisters. We just bought her a new pair of sandals this week there and they are the Amphibians. They are really adjustable and have no seems on the inside around the ankle. They are neoprene and are great in water and out. They have great support and good traction.

I agree that a good shoe is important for the day, but at night (after we have been to the hotel to rest) I will allow DD to wear a "light-up" shoe. She is not out after dark much at home and gets such a kick out of the light ups in a dark park! It also helps us keep track of her. These will most likely not be the well made shoe that the others listed here are and NO WAY would I suggest them for all day walking but at night it is fun! :teeth:

Stride Rite has lots of light up shoes that are good walkers AND light up!

Your right, I forgot about that! I think I have bought them at Laurie's locally which is a Stride Rite store. Target will have them too but they most likely will not be leather. There are sandel's too. Even character ones. Anyway they really are fun for the little guys.

Thanks for the help! Looks like I'll be heading to Stride Rite today!!!

I bought my 6 Y.O. sandals by Land's end. Bought them from Sears. I also took her 2 pairs of tennis shoes. 1 sketcher, and 1 stride rite, but she always wanted the sandals. No blisters or sore feet in 9 days- I figure that's pretty good.

I've got a couple pair of Crocs for myself and considered a pair for DS7, but I'm afraid he'll think they are too "girlie" looking. Must be that other boys don't think that?

Stride Rite, in my home town, also has TEVAs. Just a minature version of the adult TEVAs. My kids love them! They can get wet, are very rugid, and provide great traction for running from place to place. OK...I feel like a TEVA commercial... :rotfl: I just like them!!!
