Good Travel Toys for Only Child

We are making a 10 hr drive to DW in August. I have a DD who is 5 yrs old and I need some toys to entertain her. Does anyone have any good suggestions?? She's an only child so I need something she can do by herself for awhile.

Portable DVD player and lots of DVDs' .You can get them pertty cheap that plug intoa car outlet and just play away.

My girls have always liked the color wonder marker sets - you can get those mini travel ones, they think anything small is cute and fun. Also those magic pen books - they have Dora, my little pony - all sorts now - we bought the Mickey Mouse sets for our trip down.

OH - and I know that many people will disagree but sometimes you get desperate - so I took along the chalk markers and I let them color on the windows of the car... it washed off of our windows with no problems - I saved them up front with me until I needed something - new and different for a distraction.

I did that with a lot of little things, little dolls, a new Polly Pocket, special markers or twistable crayons - and when things got boring - pop out comes something new.

We take a lot of car trips - and the girls have car back packs that I pack ahead of time that they can't look in until we have been on the road 10 minutes - treats they don't normally get, new books to read, color, things to do, just finding all the little fun things I have stashed in to the pack is fun.

DVD player is the way to go. I wish I had one growing up with all the traveling we did! You could buy or rent Disney dvds, including the Sing Along ones with live characters. Get the free planning dvd too from WDW. I used them to get my son psyched for WDW and to prep him for meeting the characters for the first time.

The other thing my son loves (hes 4 now) is the Leapster game. He has learned so much from the games its hard to believe a video type game could do that. Be sure to get the recharge system to save yourself from buying batteries. It holds a charge for a long time.

My son also has a mp3 player but doesnt use that as much. I put a bunch of kids songs on it and he will sing along. Today I bought him one of the plug and play video games for $20 (Sponge Bob, and we already have Ms Pac Man version). These plug into any tv with the av plugs (yellow and white cable plugs). It will work on our car's dvd player. We have a long 2 day drive to Chicago coming up in a week.

The rest of the time he either sleeps, or we look for things out the window (trains, construction stuff which is all over the place now, etc). We also let him blow off steam at McDonalds playlands, and get a hotel with a pool.

You've got some great suggestions so far. I would add a travel size Magna Doodle and one of those magnet things where the child can create different scenes on the cardboard background.

Keep in mind that you dont want something with a lot of parts or you will be fishing behind the seat for them to keep a small child happy. Unless you have a tray, everything will have to be held in the lap. They do sell trays at One Step Ahead, but I would be very wary of them in an accident. Crayola makes a small tray (soft beanbag type on one side, hard on the other) for coloring on in the car. I believe it also has a little storage pouch. Again, I didnt buy it for fear of what it could do in an accident.

I would add V smile pocket. It is a video game and it is more educational than Game boy . My DS who is 5 loves his.

I look for sales all year at the toy store on small gifts like you would put in an Easter basket or Christmas stocking and then when we are going on a long trip in the car or on a plane I load up their backpack with a few old favorite toys and a bunch of new goodies.
