Good surge protector for laptop?

Our neighbor's son is now deployed in Iraq and he's trying to use his laptop to send email to his parents, and so on. He's in an area with only generator supplied power and so he's concerned about power fluctuations. His parents are not techinically inclined so they asked us for help. And realistically, if anyone in the neighborhood could help, they would.

So I thought of the disboard folks. Do you have any recommendations? Models to stay away from?

Any brand of a surge protector that is a real surge protector/power strip is what my husband says will work. You can go to best buy or circuit city or even wal-mart to get the surge protector.
