I really hate horror movies, and everyone seems to like them so much. Sooooooo...... are there any good "starter" horror movies I could watch and then work myself up from there? I heard "One Missed Call" was not that scary, but I don't know. I don't wanna see anything too gory or extremely scary, just something that's creepy. Thanks in advance.

Gremlins, low as horror movies go.

Well, you've come to the right place.I own the Haunted Wood (thehauntedwood.com) which is one of the fastest growing haunted houses in ohio, and has received a lot of press. In training my actors, i watch HUNDREDS of Horror movies, (not to toot my own horn) I would watch these movies in this order:

1. Zombie Land- funny and scary, great starter.
2. Silence of the lambs- THE BEST HORROR MOVIE OF ALL TIME! (no gore)
3.Phsyco ( 1960 version) Alfred Hitchcock is the best horror film maker of all time.
4.THe Crazies- (recent version, its some how better) This movie has a good mix. It has a little gore, a little scare, its great. If this is to much, continue down the list, if not, go at your leisure. Unfortunately for your sake the haunted industry has shifted in the past 5 years. People no longer want startle, but want gore, so very few are being made like that know.

5. Crimson Ghost- My personal favorite. It is a serial from the 50s that played before movies. It had 6 episodes, and is regarded as the best serial off all time. It was so good, people compared all serials to it, putting that industry out of business.IF YOU WATCH NOTHING ELSE WATCH THIS!!!!!!!

6. Dawn of the dead- great, and funny.

7.Halloween- a classic.

8. The Exorcist- the only movie besides Silence of the lambs to be nominated for bet picture.

One last call is not a good starter. It is a remake of a bad movie to start with. (also, everyone says that all horror movies aren't scary, so don't listen to people, ask experts. I recommend Fangora magazine. They have never been wrong.)

If you have ANY QUESTIONS PLEASE PM OR POST. I love horror and love taking about it.

I'm a fellow horror sissypants, but there are a few I enjoy. The trick here is to avoid movies that play on a fear you yourself have; check with friends who know you well that have seen a particular film before. (Good example: For whatever reason, over-the-top gore doesn't bother me so I was fine during Peter Jackson's "Dead-Alive". And then I had to "tent" my eyes during the scene with the breaking toenail in "Black Swan", go figure. :confused3 )

Some recommendations:

"Halloween", as mentioned above. More atmospheric and tense (very); not very gory. Note that children are under threat and a dog dies.

"Scream" - Basically an extended "Halloween" tribute. Same tone, with some dark humor mixed in. Scariest bit is the prologue but that's over quickly.

"Psycho" - If you have not at least heard of this movie, you are an alien. :rotfl: There's a reason for it's reputation. May be the most genuinely scary of the three here, three big "jump" scares including one you probably already had spoiled for you through pop-culture osmosis.

Best way to enjoy these movies, making a rough assumption on your age, is to hold a viewing party with friends and popcorn and marathon them in order of release dates. :3dglasses

One of my favorites is "When A Stranger Calls". You could also try and watch "The Fourth Kind". IMO they are both good, but not really scary.

The Scary Movies aren't as scary as you think. They're actually comedies. A favorite of mine :goodvibes

as someone who has FearNet popcorn:: , I would like to point out some good movies.

First floor: Night of the Creeps! Alien slugs that turn you into zombies if you die and lay eggs in your brain! For gore, some of the corpses heads are cracked open from the slug things hatching, and a really old one's head explodes. And a dog is dead.

Second floor: The original My Bloody Valentine!:lovestruc Awesome (albeit scary) vibes that they could die any moment, and the ending is a twist! oh, no gore but an old lady does get killed.

Third floor: Night of the living dead! Invincible zombies, Tons of them, and your in a graveyard! Did I forget to mention they are smart? Uh-oh!:scared1:

Fourth floor: Zombieland! seriously... so many zombies, and they did it for the lulz!:happytv:

Final floor: 28 days later! first we have a man in the hospital from freak bike car accident, then zombies? YES!
:woohoo:

I was in the exact same boat as you last year! Something that helped make scary movies not scary was watching them with big groups of friends, during the daytime, with the lights on...everything becomes funny then lol
