I don't think aaa would offer the same 40% off as pass holders get

Probably not, but you have to consider the difference between the ticket you'd normally buy and the AP cost.

I have AAA (I didn't join it for the hotel discount, though!), but my AAA discount reduced my RPR reservation by 20%.
