Always had the impression it was Disney's way of saying the park is closing for the night after the fireworks have ended.

We like to get ice cream from the Plaza at park close and many times have waited for the "Get the heck out of the park" message, albeit done very kindly

They don't do it anymore. I chased it for several trips, and it's one of the reasons we don't go as often. Silly as it seems. I got it once as a kid at Disneyland. I've been chasing that high ever since.

We definitely miss it, as well. It was a tradition when the kids were younger. We would get a video of them sitting in front of The Plaza Ice Cream Shop at 2am giving the "We did it!" thumbs up at 1 or 2am (we also miss the late night extra magic hours when MK would stay open that late!) with the Goodnight Kiss playing in the background.
