You may be at lower risk for contracting Covid-19. :smokin:

This is definitely not the kind of effect I would have expected smoking to have on a respiratory disease. :scratchin

“French researchers are planning to test nicotine patches on coronavirus patients and frontline health workers after a study suggested smokers may be much less at risk of contracting the virus.

The study at a major Paris hospital suggests a substance in tobacco – possibly nicotine – may be stopping patients who smoke from catching Covid-19. Clinical trials of nicotine patches are awaiting the approval of the country’s health authorities.

However, the researchers insisted they were not encouraging the population to take up smoking, which carries other potentially fatal health risks and kills 50% of those who take it up. While nicotine may protect those from the virus, smokers who have caught it often develop more serious symptoms because of the toxic effect of tobacco smoke on the lungs, they say.

The team at Pitié-Salpêtrière hospital questioned 480 patients who tested positive for the virus, 350 of whom were hospitalised while the rest with less serious symptoms were allowed home.

It found that of those admitted to hospital, whose median age was 65, only 4.4% were regular smokers. Among those released home, with a median age of 44, 5.3% smoked.

Taking into account the age and sex of the patients, the researchers discovered the number of smokers was much lower than that in the general population estimated by the French health authority Santé Publique Franceat about 40% for those aged 44-53 and between 8.8% and 11.3% for those aged 65-75.

The renowned French neurobiologist Jean-Pierre Changeux, who reviewed the study, suggested the nicotine might stop the virus from reaching cells in the body preventing its spread. Nicotine may also lessen the overreaction of the body’s immune system that has been found in the most severe cases of Covid-19 infection.

The findings are to be verified in a clinical study in which frontline health workers, hospital patients with the Covid-19 virus and those in intensive care will be given nicotine patches.

The results confirm a Chinese study published at the end of March in the New England Journal of Medicine that suggested only 12.6% of 1,000 people infected with the virus were smokers while the number of smokers in China is around 28%.

In France, figures from Paris hospitals showed that of 11,000 patients admitted to hospital with Covid-19, 8.5% were smokers. The total number of smokers in France is estimated at around 25.4%.

“Our cross-sectional study strongly suggests that those who smoke every day are much less likely to develop a symptomatic or severe infection with Sars-CoV-2 compared with the general population,” the Pitié-Salpêtrière report authors wrote.

“The effect is significant. It divides the risk by five for ambulatory patients and by four for those admitted to hospital. We rarely see this in medicine,” it added.”

And now everyone runs to buy up all the nicotine patches! :rotfl:
;)

I heard about that this morning. With all the problems Covid does to the lungs, it doesn't make sense why smokers would be in better shape.

This puzzled me also. I mean, just last month we heard reports that deaths in males in China far exceeded deaths in females and it was all due to the variance in smoking rates between the two genders. I'm not sure how to marry these two pieces of information.

Using the percentages in the article (25.4% of people smoke in France, but only 8.5% of those with Covid are smokers), could it be that smokers simply took extra precautions and didn't contract it?

The article says smokers fare worse if they actually contract the disease, but that they seem to contract it at much lower rates. The researchers are focusing on what role the nicotine might be playing. My uneducated and non-scientific guess would be that it might have to do with how the virus enters the body; oral-nasal passages made inhospitable to the virus due to the chemicals present in cigarettes, constricted blood vessels giving less opportunity to make it into the bloodstream, etc.

I heard those reports as well, but they also mentioned the higher smoking rates among men as being one possible theory for the disproportionate deaths, not that it had been confirmed as the reason.

I don't buy it at all, either this is paid for by those who make smokes OR it is coming from the same idiots who, not too long ago, said this WAS NOT respiratory, wasn't in the air and all we had to do was wash our hands. I didn't believe that and I don't believe this, I am however wondering how much it costs to buy a non US Dr these days though

Common sense says anything that weakens lungs is a bad decision.

I think the thing that shocks me the most is the percentage of smokers in China and France. Based on personal experience I would've thought it'd be higher, but maybe that percentage counts kids (who hopefully don't smoke) in the totals?

Did they look at the proportion of the population that is still alive at that age and still smoking? One would think that many smokers, if they can, would quit before getting to the age where cancers, et al. are likely. Thus, making the percentage of smokers a lower population.

Also, it could have to do with the remaining lung function. If smokers are used to a lower lung capacity (except when indulging), they might not be putting the virus as deeply in their lungs as, say, an athlete.

Or, it could be something as simple as another carcinogen within the smoke is killing the virus, but not the nicotine. I mean, why wouldn't they test other bi-products, not just the addictive product to see if there is any effect?

I have asthma pretty severe. Last year my doctor was giving me all types of inhalers to try out to try and find one that worked well for me. Never really happened, more times than one I just came out of it with bronchitis or the beginnings of the flu. During one visit he said to me that I might want to become a causal smoker, it would dry out my lungs from being so wet , haha yeah that's all I needed to hear . Needless to say I did not take that advice. But I do have to say this year I have been the healthiest I have ever been, breathing wise, not sure if it is due to the fact of not going anywhere but I have been fairing pretty well so far. Fingers crossed.

Funny you should say so...my DMom's doctor actually prescribed it for her - to calm her nerves in 1945 while she was waiting for her husband to return from the war. We've heard a lot of talk about comparing our situation to the hardships of WWII. I guess it's come full-circle. :scratchin
Smoking was considered to be a healthy thing back then. Amazing how money and lies can deceive the entire world into believing something that should have always been questioned.

I wondered about this too, but it kinda makes sense. Smoking creates a situation where there is already inflammation in the lungs and as such, already an active immune response.

I found this article about lung inflammation. One of the things that happens in response to an irritant or inflamation is an increase in surfactant mucus and Immunoglobin A. "IgA secreted by plasma cells forms an additional epithelial protective barrier, which prevents microbial adherence to the epithelial surface4 and inhibits certain viral infections (influenza and rotavirus) by interfering with their assembling processes."

Other cells present at inflamation are on the lookout for bacteria and virus in order to bind to them and make them easier to find by the rest of the immune system.

This part of it makes sense to me. Like committing a crime at the scene of another crime, the cops are already there. It doesn't seem as likely that a nicotine patch will get the same reaction but ... maybe.
