The good news: I just got a new job with my company. The bad news is that I start it 31 days out from my next DVC trip! Meaning that I won't know if I can take my vacation when planned. So should I go ahead and cancel my villa or cancel it within the 31 days if I can't get the time off. How difficult is it to rereserve when your points are in holding?

Tell the company that you annot cancel your pre-planned trip. Might work, but then I just found out I am about to be unemployed. Looking forward to those off season trips I could'nt take before.:smooth:

I think if you explain to your new boss about it being a pre-planned trip and make sure you mention it is to Disney ( people seem to understand how much money goes into Disney trips)I am sure they can arrange for you to take the time off.

This happened to me 2 years ago. I just started a brand new job ( within my old job) I had the vacation time already approved, so I just explained it to my new boss, and as long as I had the signed vacation slips, he HAD to let me go. It was a Holiday week and every thing. I think it was 3 weeks after I started my new job.

Talk to them ASAP. Don't wait until after you have already started. That way, you will have enough time to cancel your points IF they don't allow you the time. Good Luck! And keep us posted.

I think they would appreciate the advance notice, I would ask now rather than waiting.

Re-reserving probably depends on time of year and the resort and the accomodations size..don't forget if you change seasons point costs may change....

The fact that the vacation was planned should have been brought up in the interview process once things looked serious...even if it is 2 days after your start date and you expect to have no vacation time to spend. From your post I can't tell if this is a new company or just a new position for you. In the latter, you have a strong case if your current boss approved the time off and it is all documented. In the former case, it all depends on how nice the new employer is and the nature of the job...I personally wouldn't want to work someplace that would deny me pre-scheduled vacations, but I'm also not in a position where I absolutely need to get a (different) job.

Good Luck,
Joe

I agree that the time to ask about the trip is now. I "think" you are starting a new job with the same company? In that case, it seems like there's a good chance they may let you take the time. If you meet resistance, I'd cancel and re-book for some time in the future.

If it's a new job, new company, I think you'd be pushing it to take vacation the first month. But, I've seen people do it. You need to tell them now that you have a planned trip, tickets bought, etc. Be prepared to take the time "unpaid".

I agree, the sooner the better.

I had this happen to me, and as the Manager offered me the position on the phone I told her right there that I had a vacation planned and that I hoped that it would not present a problem.

She told me that it would be fine. I think they appreciate the advance notice.

Good luck.

As a boss, I have . . .

1) Let people take an early vacation.
2) Let people take an un-paid 1-week leave.
3) I have NEVER prevented a new hire's vacation.

Thanks everyone! I am actually starting a new job within the same company. I think that I will probably just tell then now that I have a trip planned and I need to see if can be approved so that I will have time to reschedule if they say no. Thanks again!

That sounds like the perfect way to phrase it. Here's hoping they say, "Sure, no problem!". :smooth:
