KEY LARGO, Fla. -- Rescuers released a 3-foot nurse shark named Amy off the Florida Keys on Friday, ending a trek that began when the fish was rescued from a closed Michigan nightclub.

Wendy Rhodes, a volunteer for People for the Ethical Treatment for Animals, said Amy was taken in a tank to an area near John Pennekamp Coral Reef Park and a diver helped her swim into the ocean.

Nurse sharks are indigenous to the area and are not aggressive toward humans, she said.

"There were other nurse sharks down there and they seemed very interested in her and welcomed her to the neighborhood," Rhodes said.

Amy, who is estimated to be between 3 and 5 years old, had been living in a tank in the center of Club Nova, a Pontiac, Mich., nightclub that closed about a month ago.

When the tank was drained, Amy was placed in a water-filled trash can and taken to a pet shop, which contacted PETA. The animal-rights group had Amy flown Thursday to South Florida.

Robert Lingenfelser, president of the Marine Mammal Conservancy in Key Largo, has said Amy should fare well because she was captured in the ocean and she should still have hunting instincts.

What a great story! I love a happy ending. Hope Amy has a long life in the Keys. :)
