Good "How-to" book?

We just bought a Canon S5 and it seems a little daunting at the moment. I know just enought to be dangerous with it but would like some more info about being a good photographer. I don't have time to take a class. Would anyone have a suggestion of a good how-to book about photography? THANKS!

Everyone will say that "Understanding Exposure" by Bryan Peterson is the best book out there to help you really understand photography. A picture of the book is below. It is written very well and can explain alot of different aspects of photography in general.

I would also HIGHLY recommend downloading the pdf copy from the shortcourse series of books. The link is here: http://www.shortcourses.com/store/canon-s5is.html . These books are excellent! Well written, easy to understand and they go into each aspect of YOUR camera. That is what I liked the most. The user manuals are rather boring and don't give you any idea by examples as to what they are saying. These books do it all.
