Good hotels near Universal Studios Hollywood?

I don't know where else to post the question, so I found the board with "Universal" in the name.

Is there a fairly inexpensive hotel near Universal Studios Hollywood? By inexpensive I mean under $100. Do the hotels have free shuttles to the Studios?

How much is a 1 day pass to Universal Studios Hollywood?

You'll find more hotels near the Disneyland area of Anaheim. Doing that you'll be near Disney and Knotts Berry Farm. The city of Garden Grove is also near Anaheim, and I've stayed at the Ramada Limited twice. Look for hotels in those two cities. USH is located in Hollywood just north of LA, very crowded and there's no hotels within walking distance that I know of. You get off the highway and it leads right into the parking garage.

We stayed at the Sheraton Universal City. The Hilton is a little cheaper than the Sheraton and there is also a Holiday Inn that is about a mile and a bit away. The Sheraton and Hilton are walkable but there is a free shuttle.

Is there an alternate route to UHS from Disneyland area? I've visited before and taken Santa Ana I-5 northbound. It's always been a traffic jam. Would going north on Orange Hwy 57 then west be better? I'm going to be in Anaheim 4/7 thru 4/14

Not really. If you are going to USH on a weekday, the commute is going to be packed no matter what freeway you take (especially toward LA/Hollywood).

The 5 isn't bad on weekends until you get close to the 101 and once you get on the 101 it's almost always packed (weekend or weekday).

Taking the 57 to an alternate west freeway (60 or 10) isn't going to make a difference because you go to far out of the way and then you still have to get on the 101 to get to USH.

If you take the 57 to the 210 to the 134 on a weekend, there won't be a lot of traffic but it'll probably take you the same amount of time since you really go out of the way.
