Good campsite on the ocean?

I've been looking at Gamble Rogers Memorial State Recreation Area. Anyone know if that's a good place?

Coming from land-locked North Dakota, going to the ocean is huge. It will be everyone's first time seeing the ocean except for me (and I've only seen it twice). What I like about the Gamble Rogers Memorial State Recreation Area is that you camp pretty much right on the beach. That's exactly what I'm looking for.

Anyone have any other suggestions?

So do you know anything about Gamble Rogers Memorial State Recreation Area? I don't. Never been. Camping on the beach does sound cool though, so I'm hoping someone has some info. I need a warm fuzzy...

Sorry, nope. I'm afraid that we're as land-locked as North Dakota. I do have fond memories of Florida beaches, though.

I was just there a few weeks ago. The campsites are on like a cul-de-sac. 1/2 are on the ocean and 1/2 are separated by a dirt road. They had a nice CS and there are stairs every so often for access to the beach. You actually check in across A1A and they have a big turn around spot. Near the check in is an access to the Intracoastal Waterway. Lots of good fishing in the creeks for redfish and flounder. One bad thing I hear is it's hard as hell to get a site. I didn't stay there personally. Just checked it out because I plan on staying this spring and doing some kayak fishing.

Another place if you can't get here is Anastasia Island SP in St. Augustine. No oceanfront sites but nice and close to a lot of food and attractions. If you do get GRSP don't miss going to Manny's Pizzaria. They have an awesome greek omelet.

We stayed here two years ago in site 68 which backed up to the ocean:

The campground was very clean, the people were very friendly but our site was way too tight for our 42' motorhome. If we ever venture that way again, we would definitely opt for site 71 or 65 which are end sites and have more room.

Destin is very close and there are a ton of activities for the kids, great restaurants and nightlife.

On our trip to the Fort in 2008 someone on this board (I'm suffering from CRS and the name escapes me) recommended Hunting Island State Park - the place is great and was only $20 per night. The water was warm, dolphins off the coast, deer in the campground at night, lots of trees between sites; let me dig aroun' here a bit and see if I can scare up a photo or two....

Here are the shots; we were at site #95. Had water and electric (there are two dumping stations in the CG), right next to a trail to the water. Lots of shade which was important in August in South Carolina.

The FL state parks with campgrounds were all booked up for the night we need, but I found this place today:

and made a reservation. It's in St. Augustine, FL. I'm almost more excited to camp close to the ocean than I am to camp at the Fort.

We're huge history nerds, so we're super excited to tour St. Augustine!

I really really don't want to rain on your parade, but I was born and raised in St Augustine and the last time I checked out this campground (about 2 yrs ago), I was so disappointed in all the permanent trailers that people lived in. There is absolutely no shade or trees. The pool and CS's are clean but old. Now it is right on the beach, but the cg itself will be so disappointing to you. Did you check into Anastasia State Park like Donnie recommended? You would still be so close to the beach. Unless it is having a pool that interests you, I would go for the state park before this campground. Just my honest and humble opinion.

PS St Augustine has the most beautiful beaches and tons of stuff to do for history buffs! I love love the town and people.

look at north beach camp resort vilano beach,fl.which is minutes from st augustine via vilano beach bridge.as stated you will not be happy with bryn mawr unless you get a waterfront site, and then the campground still sucks. north beach is the only campground we stay in st augustine,you can bring your golf cart, pool,jacuzz, and aunt kates restaurant on property is great....

I forgot about North Beach Campground! Yes, this is a nice place. I have spent a week there before. It is really nice!

Thanks, also, for recommending some other places. I will check into those places. Yep, I checked Anastasia State Park and it is booked up. Well, there is one site but the maximum length is 28 feet and our rv is 31 feet. I would love to stay at a state park, and I checked into all of them in the area, but they are all booked.
