My son is in FIRST grade. He is advanced in reading though. I struggle to get him to read on his own. I dont want to force him to read. I want him to WANT to read!! He likes dragons and dinosaurs, but most books about either are either WAY above or WAY below his reading level. He likes all sorts of things that most little boys like! Please help me!!!!!!
Thanks

my 7 yr old likes Captain Underpants---they are very good for kids who don't want to read--very silly, zany books. You might also try Magic Tree House series---they get harder as the # go up. Ex. #37 is about 3rd-4th grade level. Cam Jansen is also good.

How about a pop-up book?

I know that they can be tough to find, but we stumbled on one at Barnes and Noble that my 4-year-old fell in love with. It's about dinosaurs and not too difficult for a first grader. If he's an advanced reader, he can handle the words, I imagine, and the "hands on" approach might catch his attention and encourage him to want to sit down with a book. As for my daughter, she likes making the Tyrannasaurus Rex sing "Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer". :rotfl2:

This particular one is called "Pop-Up Facts: Dinosaurs".

Author: Richard Dungworth
Illustrators: Kim Thompson and Steve Kingston
Published by Barnes and Noble and copyrighted in 2006 by The Templar Company

I just thought those would help in a search. We picked this up about two months ago (about $10.00), and it has a picture of a Triceratops on the cover. I hope this helps!

Hi Coupon Buddy!! I am a first grade teacher, mom of a current first grader (DD Katie) and mom of an avid 5th Grade reader (DS10). My son has always read above grade level. Here are some of his favorite chapter books from that age:
Magic Tree House
Goosebumps
Junie B. Jones
I get 80% of my books from www.scholastic.com, as a teacher we get bonus points with each order!:goodvibes

At our school we use Star Reader to figure out children's Reading level (ZPD). Then children read books and take comprehension tests on Accelerated Reader (AR). Children should score at least 80% on AR tests. AR also tracks each student's word count. Students earn certificates and/or medals in January for reaching certain Word Count Goals and at the end of the year earn trophies. They also award a plaque to the Top Reader of the Year. You might ask your child's teacher if they use this program. Some schools don't start the reading program until second grade.

I also have 1st grade son who is a great reader. He LOVES Junie B Jones books. LOVES them! His wonderful teacher just told me about a series that they are starting in their class. It is called Ready Freddy. I guess it is basically the "boy version" of Junie B. My SIL is a 1st grade teacher and she recently mailed my DS some Dragon Tale and Fly Guy books. Her class loves them I guess.

Good luck! :goodvibes

Thank you so much for all of the replies!! For those of you who recommended the tree house books. Do you have a problem with the grammar in them? Some of the reiews on amazon were not the greatest.

Now that you mention it, I do remember running across some goofy grammar in those books. We've only read 2 of them with my son, he of course didn't notice the grammar mistakes, but he loved the stories!

My kids all love Magic TreeHouse. I've ready a few of them aloud and haven't really noticed any grammar issues.

My second grader also likes SkippyJon Jones, Fly Guy and the Step into Reading character books like Star Wars. Oh, and any Spongebob joke books (we find those in the Scholastic book orders).

My 1st grader DS loves to read and is very advanced - he is reading the Harry Potter Series (had to stop after 2nd one though b/c of content), the first in the Warriors series and is now reading Prince Caspian from the Chronicles of Narnia. Last year he was into the Magic Tree House series, Jigsaw Jones series and A-Z mysteries - great series for boys to get them into reading. He also liked the Nate the Great books and Flat Stanley books! I have a million more books upstairs in his room if you need more ideas - he was going through a book every 2-3 days so I just started buying the series in bulk to keep up with him. Have you thought about Non-Fiction type books - for some reason my son loves those too!

I also have an advanced reader.. in first grade..

She loves Magic Tree House, Junie B Jones, Henry and Mudge, STinky Pants and Tiara Club

These are some of the fiction series that DS7 enjoys:

Magic Treehouse
Junie B. Jones
Goosebumps
Secret Agent Jack Stalwart
Secret of Droon
Cam Jansen

For non-fiction books, DS7 likes:

DK Readers
All Aboard Science Readers
Step into Reading

My DS7 was has always been an advanced reader. He was reading magic treehouse books at 5 years. He loved them. He started reading Harry Potter at age 6. It took him a year to read them all. Yes the content is advanced, but I made sure to go over things with him as he was reading. He has not seen any of the movies yet. He liked the Ready Freddy books, but I would buy them from the book order, and he would have them finished before he got off the bus. :rotfl:

If your son doesn't like reading books, have you tried a magazine. Both my boys love the National Geographic Kids magazine. Also they read the Sunday comics. Anything to get them reading is great, it doesn't have to be a story. Also non-fiction. One of my son's favorite books is the biography of Ben Franklin. :confused3

Let me add here, that if you'll check out ebay, you can get books in lots (sometimes the whole series) for very reasonable prices (new or used).

My DD7 loves most of the series' listed already but she is also working her way through a book called Eragon (?) she says she likes it. She read the whole Chronicles of Narnia set, and also the Lemony Snickets books.
