Hey there. I just wanted to add some things about bulldogs. They're definitely good sleepers and loungers (although as puppies they're as wild and hyper as any young dog) but they are not easy to housebreak or train. So if you do go with one, be ready for a lot of work and a lot of watching the dog constantly. They're also pretty social, so if you work all day, not a great idea. Ours was very good with other dogs but not with children. I'm sure if you socialize them from a young age, they're fine. I've never seen them on the restricted breed list of any of the apartments I've looked at, but you never know.
Also be aware that they have a lot of health problems. (Another good reason to look for a mixed breed instead.) I adored our bulldog and would never have traded her for anything, but I don't think I'd ever have another one.
I saw a
national geographic on labradoodles a few days ago. They seem to be very good-natured dogs. Also, I've been looking into retired racing greyhounds, who it turns out are wonderful apartment pets. They nap and lounge most of the time and are able to curl their very big bodies up into small spaces. Some rescue organizations require a fenced in yard, but a lot of them don't. Also, they're supposed to be the no-allergy pet.
Also, one more vote for the shelter. You'd be surprised at the number of terrific dogs who don't have homes.
