Goo Goo Dolls pulled a "dixie chick" in Toronto!

national sovereignty issues come to mind,

All I can say to this is that Iraq signed away their national sovereignty rights vis a vis WMD when they signed the 1991 cease-fire. They had no right as a sovereign nation to continue to develop or keep WMD.

I think there's a big difference between saying that you didn't have sex with someone and getting on television and making statements that you know are untrue to generate popular support for a war that will kill thousands of people.

I must have missed that news flash - where has it been proven that President Bush made statements that he knew to be untrue?

i did not mean to imply that it was their legal right, i just meant from saddam's pov, national sovereignty could have been an issue. :)

"If there are/were no WMD, why in God's name wouldn't they allow the inspectors in to confirm this?"

That hit the nail right on the head.

"i just meant from saddam's pov"

And from Saddam's POV it was okay to put people through a shredder (feet first so they'd suffer longer) From Saddam's POV it was okay to build lavish palaces while 5,000 children died monthly from lack of food and or medicine. Does anyone care about Saddam's POV? I'm hoping his only POV right now is looking straight up from 6 feet under.

I like the Goo Goo Dolls. Johnny Rzeznik is cute too (can I say that here?) and I love the music he did for Treasure Planet. As for what they say, I don't really care but they have the right thank goodness.

i'm sorry, perhaps i was not clear when responding to afr.

give me a break! obviously i am not trying to JUSTIFY anything saddam has done, and if you think i am saying that the stuff he did is ok, i'm definately not (and i don't see how you could be getting that from what i wrote).

the only reasons i was giving saddam's possible pov's was as an example of alternative reasons why saddam might have been denying entry to inspectors. i am not saying it was right; i am not saying i agree; i am just saying there are other possibilities.

i was trying to explain where saddam might be coming from in terms of refusing inspectors access if he did not have WMD. if you think that is impossible, then why even respond?

No I'm sorry, my post was off topic. Saddam was a twisted sick individual and to try to get into his psyche is futile anyway.

On topic however: Resnick can say what he wants, where he wants- I don't agree with him (Clinton was anything but cool:rolleyes: ) but Resnick can think what he likes.

I have ZERO respect for people who feel the need to make political comments in a venue such as a concert. If don't pay to see a concert to hear someone spout their opinions on politics when they have no authority on the subject. They are by all means entitled to their opinion but I think it is in INCREDIBLY poor form to 1) say it to a foreign country and 2) think that people going to your concert want to hear it.

As for the love it or leave it remarks....... there is SOME validity to it. Everyone is entitled to their opinions. Thank GOD for freedom of speech. However, I have no respect for people who just whine and complain without trying to do something about it. You think the President's actions are unjust? You think that the war was unjust? Then DO SOMETHING ABOUT IT. Start a petition. Try to make a difference. THAT is what Freedom of Speech is about. It's not about the freedom to whine. (Although unfortunately, that is covered as well.)

**edited to add.........So...if you hate it that much and just want to whine....then I won't be sorry to see you go. I'd have a helluva lot more respect for someone who tries to fight the system to overcome injustice than for someone who just says a few catchy phrases because they think they're entitled to it.

*********edited to add......this is by NO way directed at anyone here!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! This is more in response to these so-called celebrities who make their comments and get their digs in but do nothing to follow up on it!!!!!! These celebs DO have some real power behind them because they can get through to the masses.....IN APPROPRIATE venues however....yet the vast majority don't do a damn thing about it. IT's time for them to put to put up or shut up IMO. I have much greater respect for the stars that DO something even if I don't agree with them!
I'm VERY sorry if anyone took it personally it was absolutely NOT intended for that!!!

I agree that it's great to live in a country where you can freely express your opinions about our government. However, I don't think a concert full of people who didn't come to hear about politics is the place to do it. I would be irritated if I had paid money to go to a concert and had to listen to their personal polital agenda.

It's unpatriotic to speak your mind against a war for which the government lied about its justification?

in a foriegn country? Yes!!! (IMO)

Speaking as someone who attended a great concert on Saturday in Chicago:

After spending what I spent on tickets AND concessions  - I would have been extremely offended if ANY of the performers had stood on that stage and professed their political views to the audience. That's not what I paid for. I paid to hear them perform their music - and in my case, that's just exactly what they did. :D

your permitted to, but it sure is an ignorant statement.

...a little harsh with the "ignorant" comments aren't we?

Can't we disagree without resorting to stuff like this?

That was harsh? I can think of dozens of harsher ways to say what caity said (granted, only a handful of them wouldn't get censored here...)

I agree Steve....there are many ways to disagree with someone's statement that would definately not be suitable for these boards. I just think it's pretty childish to tell someone that their opinion/statement is ignorant. Isn't this entire thread based on freedom of speech?

I just don't understand why EVERY time a subject like this comes up for "debate" here on the DIS, we always manage to get so hurtful with our comments - not only in what Caity has said, but in what has been said back to her. It always turns into a vicious circle. :(
