Being Valentine's Day I thought I'd wacth a romantic classic. So I just finished Gone With the Wind and I have to say it is probably the most tragic thing I have ever seen! I want to cry, yet I'm so angry!!!!! Where was the happy ending????? Why the heck is this film considered a classic???? Someone please help me!!!

:(

frankly my dear, we dont give a damn what you think ;)

OMG, Gone With The Wind is my most favorite movie of all time. I think I just may go watch it.

I loved the book. I read it when I was about 14 and I still remember the details.

I like the movie too, but then I am a sucker for melodrama.

You need to watch the sequel, "Scarlett".. If you like to read, you could probably get it at the library.. Just be forewarned - it's a BIG book!

oh what a good idea, I should pull out this movie!!! I have to admit the first time I seen it (14 or so) I didn't get it...now i love it though.

I love GWTW! I'm from the area it was set in. My first home was in Jonesboro and I grew up next door. In that sense, it's a window into the past. It was a beautifully made movie, too. The acting was superb! I LOVED Mammy and Scarlett.....:D They are both good examples of strong Southern women.

I loved the book and was so excited to see the movie when it was first shown on TV when I was about 12. Loved the movie too at the time.

Fast forward to my 20s and I am watching tv with some african american friends and coworkers. I exclaim that I "love this movie". Well, my friend tells me that she can't stand the movie because of its portrayal of the slaves and how the actors are all "yes massa" etc. Well I was so embarrased and I looked at the movie in a whole different light. She understood that I meant I loved the whole tragic love story aspect of the movie, not the slave owning part, but still I can't really enjoy the movie the way I used to.

But what makes the strory great is that there is no "happy ending". It would have been too easy and predictable if Rhett had just said, "yes I love you too" and they lived happily ever after

The happy ending when Scarlett says "Tomorrow is another day." She demonstrates the same thing that the Little Engine that Could did.

My DH calls me Scarlett because I have her same attitude and I'm a witch at times...LOL!

That is my favorite move ever!

I love this movie as well. I think it's such a good movie cause Scarlett tackles everything head on~ although she can be a witch, she gets things done. And the drama, the costumes, the love story just add to it all. Sigh. I may have to go find my DVD (my DVDs are a big mess right now thanks to Mr. Two Year Old Son) and watch it tomorrow.

And I wanted to add my own Six Degrees of Separation about this movie- my grandmother went to high school with Olivia de Havilland (Melanie). :D

Well let me share some history too! My parents live on the old Susan Myrick place in Milledgeville GA. Susan Myrick was some sort of technical producer for the film. When my parents bought the place in 1978 there was all sort of memorabilia there. This stuff is priceless now, my parents are so lucky.

Put me also into the category of that being my one time all favorite movies!

I saw "Gone With the Wind" on the "big screen" when I was 10 or 12 years old, and fell in love with it even at that young age. And wow, a movie with an intermission!! Cool!! :teeth:

I've seen it many, many times. It's an absolutely wonderful movie. Even though it "didn't end right", I could still imagine Scarlett and Rhett eventually getting back together and living their "happily-ever-after."

The movie "Scarlett" was good too, even though of course they didn't have the original stars. I think Timothy Dalton makes a good Rhett too!! :teeth:

I am also one of the die hard Gone with the Wind fans........

I just love Scarlett and think that Ashley is such a wimp.....

margaret mitchell never intended to write a sequel to her masterpiece GWTW. she knew from the very beginning exactly how she wanted the story to end...and she ended it with rhett leaving scarlett, but her heroine vowing to get him back. she basically left it to our imaginations as to how WE wanted the story to end.

the "sequel" scarlett, by alexandra ripley, was alright. it wasn't the story that everyone liked...in fact, most die-hard GWTW windies won't even consider the book a true sequel. the movie, as compared to the book, was horrific. i enjoyed both, but i didn't think of them as continuations of my beloved GWTW. that's just MY opinion, of course! there are many other people who would happily disagree with me and that's perfectly alright. :)

i belong to a group of people who write their own ideas as to what happened to rhett and scarlett. it's pretty interesting to read!! if anyone's interested in the fanfic groups, feel free to IM me and i'll point you in the right direction. :)

i'm not into the slavery part of the movie at all, but i get swept up in the love story behind rhett and scarlett. his determination to make her love him...her determination not to love him...it's just a beautiful story...i do love the relationship between scarlett and mammy though. mammy keeps her in her place!

the movie just tells the story of a strong and determined woman who wants the best for her life. my DH has called me "scarlett" for 15 years! and of course, he's my "rhett"...thankfully, our love story's had a happier ending than the couple in the book. :)
