Goldfish!

I want to know why people use goldfish as centerpieces at wedding receptions?:confused3

My cousin got married a year and a half ago and we brought home the fish in the center piece. and it is still alive.

I have no idea. Goldfish always get a bum rap though. Goldfish and bettas.

Just curious, but does anyone on the disboards breed and/or show goldfish?

People actually breed and/or show goldfish??? Seriously?? :confused3 I never knew!

Well, they have to come from somewhere. :P

Goldfish shows are sort of like dog shows. They judge on conformation, color, health, size, ect. Show quality goldfish can go from 100 - 500 dollars, some very high quality fish can go for thousands of dollars.

Soooo, no goldie breeders?

Sorry for the bump, I'm just very bored and pretty loopy thanks to the wonder of COLD MEDICATION yeeesss.

I have outside goldfish. We have a unique front entrance to the house, it has a pond right in front of the house and you get to the house over a bridge. We have been there 6 years. We got a bunch of ten cent goldfish at the pet store when we moved in and put them in there and they are doing great. We don't bring them in in the winter and they do fine. We don't have a filter either. (I'm sorry if we are abusive goldfish owners!)

Yup, goldfish are very hardy fish. Even though they've survived so far, a filter will help keep the water quality excellent and promote the growth of your fish. Though I know if the pond is very big (as in more than 20 gallons per fish) and has an abundence of plant life/green water people can maintain a pond without a filter ( I don't know too much about it, I've never kept a pond. I would love to though. I would love to have a greenhouse with a few good sized ponds).

Anyone want to post pictures of their goldfish? Heck, even of goldfish they just like?

in the children's room of the library where i work, there is a large fish tank with assorted fish, and one very large parrot fish - would that qualify as a goldfish?!

anyway - we named him "big red" and he's very social - always front and center of the fish tank, "follows" your finger back and forth - and gets very animated at feeding time!!

XD I guess he would technically qualify. He sounds like a lovely fish.

Man, I wish my local library had fish.

still bored? just sharing... my daughter's goldfish was given to her by her good friend over the summer. the fish is a pond fish. she is still doing good in our 10 gal aquarium. her name is mary. i am wondering if i should get a bigger tank. i want the fish to get bigger. she is about 5 inches right now.

Well, at 5 inches she is probably great in the 10 gallon right now. It depends on what type of goldfish you have. I assume by pond fish you mean a shubunkin, wakin, jinkin, comet or common, so she probably will need an upgrade as she gets bigger (I would suggest 20 gallons).

Yes, I am still pretty bored (all I've been doing all day is sleeping, dishes and the internet). I need to play around with my new picture thingy to get used to it. Could I post some pictures here of pretty goldfish or would it be to spam-like?

thanks nomi. i'm sure it will be fine to post pictures of the goldfish. i'm really not sure what kind of fish it is, all i know is that the goldfish came from the pond. i'll probably will get a 20 gallon soon.

Ah, ok. If you can describe the fish to me I can probably help you identify the type, if you want.

Heres a picture of one very nice fish from goldfishconnection.com (an online weekly goldfish auction). It's an amazing tri-color ryukin, the site puts it at 8 inches in length. It went for over $500 (al least, that is what the price was at when I stopped watching).

We've had several different types of fish. One time I had an angelfish and some other types of fish and we left for a 2 day trip. I was 10 at the time and thought they would need a LOT of food while we were gone so I poured the whole can of food in there. :scared1: When we got back they were dead and shredded. I've since found out their food can be toxic to them.

thanks for posting the pics. mine is a slender one. i'll see if i can find one on the internet, and tell you what kind it is.

We started with two $5 goldfish.

Then a raccoon ate one, so now there is one. Hopefully. I haven't seen it under the ice for a couple of weeks but that is because the ice is covered with snow. I do have a de-icer.

However, the pond is really just a fancy water dish for the cranky cat (who has no interest in fish at all)

As the mom of a toddler, my first thought was the snack! I feel like I should buy stock in goldfish to somehow break even!

I had real goldfish in my classroom at my old school, those are hearty fish!
