As I was doing spring cleaning, I came across some old/broken jewlery... you know the old ankle braclet some guy gave you in the 8th grade ....:rotfl:
I piled it all up and took it to my jewler to sell. There was enough broken/kinked chains, lonley earings ugly charms to fit in the palm of my hand. and it brought me .... $ 570 dollars:cool1: That was more than enough to cover DH's & I park passes with money to spare:thumbsup2

none of the items had sentimental attachments to me ..it was just lying there wasting space.

Thanks to the last jerk I dated for giving me a braclet that I sold today to go on vacation with my WONDERFUL HUSBAND and DD :lovestruc:cutie:

Oooohhh thanks for the reminder. I've been scraping up some extra cash this week because we are oh so close to paying off our car and I just want to get RID of that payment!

That is awesome!

I have to do the same with my old class ring... the one I got and month later found out I was moving out of state!

21 years later and I am still ticked I had to move! :sad1:

I do gold party's in people's homes for a living. I would suggest that you have a party. My hostess's average @ $800 just for having the party! My top payout to a hostess was $2200! And that is not even for selling gold it was just for having the party.

what are the names of the companies that do these home parties???

Thanks for tge reminder, I had thought of doing that and then forgot, when tge baby goes down for a nap I might see what I have!

You might want to go to a few jewelers who have been in business a long time, get their prices, and compare.

One of the major networks did an expose on those gold party companies -- they short changed people a few hundred bucks, on average. I'm sure it's online somewhere.

The people doing the work at the parties may be conscientious, but if the scales are rigged, or the little mechanisms they use to determine quality are rigged, they wouldn't necessarily know. They also had some prepared speeches explaining to people why their jewelry stamped 14k really wasn't 14k... even though independent jewelers hired by the news crew confirmed that the jewelry actually WAS 14k.

So your best bet is to compare results from people you can walk away from and then go back to with your best offer.

Remember folks, everyone involved: the hostess, the representative who comes to buy the gold, the gold party company the representative sends the gold to, the refiner, are all taking a cut out of your value. Secondly, nobody goes in business to lose money. Do your homework before you decide to take the easy way out, you may not realize how much you are paying for this night of fun.

hmmm...there is a company that owns their own gold refinery about an hour from me. they advertise on tv about cutting out the middleman and giving customers the most money for their gold. would this be a good idea? i've got my old stuff together, just haven't sold it.

I am sure you would not be insinuating that I would ever do this. The company I work for has had an article written on them in the Wall Street journal and has had someone from CNN come to a party and did a story on us. Not ALL gold party company's are bad. We have over 5,000 reps in the US and Canada doing party's everyday. If we were doing the things you stated we would not be so successful. We have several people who check out jewlers before the party and we always pay top dollar.

Common sense dictates that if your company wasn't making a LOT of money off of these parties they wouldn't be doing it. So why pay you, your company and the host if there are alternatives that cut out those commissions?

Do your homework. Look up the price for a troy ounce of gold then divide it by 31.1 to find the price per gram. Then you have to see the percentage of actual gold in your jewelry and multiply by that (14 karat gold would be .585) to get the value of a gram. Now you can have an approximate value so when you get it weighed you can see how much they are offering. It sounds like a pain but the difference can be a lot of money and well worth the effort.

Also make sure you have your gold in categories. Don't mix 14k and 18k, for instance. Have the best idea of what it's worth before you take one step out the door. Knowledge is power :thumbsup2

Edit: If gold is selling for, say, $30/gram don't expect to get $30 for it, anyone you sell it to is going to have costs that need to be made up. The idea is to strike a balance that leaves everyone happy (especially you, since it's your gold).
