We're considering doing the salmon bake while in Juneau, but I was wondering what everyone's reviews of it are like. The food looks good, and the atmosphere looks really cool. But I'm wondering if it's all really worth the steep price? We were planning on eating in Juneau anyway at one of the local restaurants and this seems like a fun option. Plus we really want to try the Alaska salmon while we're there (although admittedly we're going early in the season and I wouldn't be surprised if the salmon is imported from somewhere else or frozen from the previous year). Did you like the food and the experience, and would you recommend it?

When we dock in Juneau, the plan is to first go to Mendenhall glacier and walk around, including to Nugget Falls, and then take our shuttle back to the port. We're deciding between the salmon bake or going on the Goldbelt Tram and we were just thinking of playing everything by ear, especially since we can buy a tram ticket right at the entrance. Does anyone know if there are vendors selling the salmon bake tickets right at the port, or is it something we really should decide ahead of time and buy online? I think the two things that are keeping us from buying either ticket ahead of time is the weather, and how long we'll spend at the glacier, since we want to take our time and not feel the need to rush back. We booked through a third party vendor directly, and they have flexible shuttle options so we can stay however long we want.

I have no answer for you but was wondering how you are getting to Mendenhall glacier?

We're using a company called Juneau Whale Watch. We've been to Alaska previously and did the whale watch with them and they were great, especially about helping me reschedule some things at the last minute. They also offer shuttles to the glacier. What I like about them is that they have shuttles leaving the glacier every 30 minutes, so you can stay as long as you want (within their operating hours and your ship's schedule). I really love this idea, because we want to hike to Nugget Falls, check out the visitor center, and maybe explore a little of the other trails and I don't want to feel rushed or feel like we need to run back to the meeting place to catch our bus. We actually just booked the Juneau City & Mendenhall Glacier tour with them. That one is nice because you book a designated boarding time, so we'll know we have a seat on the bus. They also offer another cheaper option that's just a shuttle service, but it also leaves the port every 30 minutes and it's a first come, first service thing, so you might wait around if a lot of people booked this option and you can't get on the shuttle you want.

Thanks so much, this is exactly what we are looking for.
I also want do visit the glacier but don't want to go as part of a tour so was looking around for a shuttle to take us there and back on our own time.

My parents did this through Disney (I think it was this one...unless there is another salmon cooking one) and really enjoyed it. They didn't try to cram it in with other excursions though.

We did a combination of the Salmon Bake and Mendenhall Glacier through Disney last year. The excursion first took us to the Glacier and then afterwards we got dropped off at the Salmon bake. The food was real good and it was a nice way to end our excursion. We could also stay as long as you wanted. The Salmon Bake had shuttles running back to the port for when you wanted to leave.
