I know these threads get pretty heated, but I'm a bit upset with my second job right now. I work at an amusement park at a water ride. There is one aspect of it that is very physically demanding and normally ends up with me spending part of my day soaked.

I contracted a cold at school (probably from being spit in the face multiple times this week). The last three times this happened I ended up with bronchitis, and sure enough I spent all of last night coughing and it's even worse today. I called in for my shift because I know there's no way I can go out there and work a 10 hour shift like this. When I called, my supervisor was very reluctant to accept it. She kept asking if there was any way I could come in- even though when I told her what was wrong I told her I am literally coughing up stuff at this point. I finally had to tell her that I've been coughing until I get sick.

I'm sorry that apparently there are other crew members sick. But this is only the third time I've called in this season- all of which were for various bouts with bronchitis. I've come in and worked the ride with literally no voice. She knows if I could make it I would. People always get up in arms about how people go into work when they are sick and spread things around. This is why.

I hear what you are saying. If you are honestly sick then an employer needs to accept that. Companys who lay off people want everyone else to pick up the slack, and no one is allowed to get sick? I just read another thread where people are getting wrote up for being sick with a doctors note. I dont even know if that is allowed, that sounds like bullying to me. Have you seen your bosses come in sick? Get well. Jo

I haven't seen my sup come in sick, no. But then, I don't think she's been sick because she also hasn't had occasion to call off. I've been dealing with some nasty bouts of bronchitis (or asthma, depending on the doctor or the day). I'm fine until I get a cold, and I teach elementary school and have a student who literally spits in my face. I'm going to the Minute Clinic later to see if there is anyway to stop this before it gets worse. The last three times this happened, it lasted a month each. I also need to get an excusal note so that I don't get points. I won't be reprimanded or anything as I don't currently have points, but I want to prove to them that I really am sick.

what is a season? do you mean this summer if so then 3 times for a part time worker is a lot.

It runs from February-November. I have had two bouts of bronchitis in that time- all documented by a doctor. This will be my third. The work is very physically demanding with long hours and no overtime. I can easily work a 16 hour day and do not get paid overtime. During full time we can work up to 52 hours in one week without overtime. We're out there in the heat, or the freezing cold, so people do get sick a lot. Three separate days in one season is really not that much compared to most, and I already feel guilty doing it. But my priority is my full time teaching job, and I'm not going to make myself even more sick by going in when I obviously should not.

Places only care about the bottom line, and it is sick.

I am a flight attendant, and I can only call in three times a YEAR without risk of being fired. If I get sick on a Monday and have two trips that week, that counts as two sick calls. I think really hard before I call in again (what if I get REALLY sick?). Thus, I usually go to work sick at least once a year.

No, my supervisor doesn't come in sick.

that is why SHE needs to fill in.... No supervising today, just actually work for a change:rotfl2:, sorry to hear that you are not feeling well, I hope that you feel better.

My sister worked at a place like that, they also got points too:sad2:
Of course, the bosses don't come in sick, they stay home and boss people around via home:eek:

What a man shall sow, that he shall also reap. You know what I am saying. Sometimes bullying isnt limited to school. It appears in the work force just in a different manner. Jo

Several years ago, I was the assistant to a bank president. He was actually a really nice guy and treated his staff very well. He was never sick (not even a sniffle) in the first two years I worked for him and never took time off. Once he was looking for a particular employee and I told him she was out sick. He said, "You know. I just don't get why people have to call in sick. I mean, how could they possibly feel so badly that they can't come in to a desk job?" I had called in sick a few times in those two years and he never said anything to me about it. But, apparently, he had no understanding, let alone sympathy, for people who were sick.

A few months later, he got the flu. His wife called me one morning and said he would be staying home. She said he was achy, coughing, had no voice and could hardly get out of bed. He ended up with a sinus infection and had to go on antibiotics. He was off work for a whole week! When he came back, I asked him how he was feeling. He said, "I finally understand why people need to call in sick. I've never been that sick before but now I realized how awful it feels." Even though I liked the guy, I think that flu was the best thing that ever happened to him (beside hiring me, of course!).:lmao:

I always had chronic bronchitis...for years. My doctor turned me on to Mucinex. As soon as I feel the tickle, I start taking it. I have not had bronchitis since. I take the one in the red box, you need to get it behind the pharmacy counter. Maybe you can give it a try. You spit like crazy...it is quite gross however; I have not needed an antibiotic since!
