Going to the beach with a knee injury?

I know this probably sounds off the wall but I'm recovering from a knee injury (torn meniscus/knee cap out of place). I'm in physical therapy right now and will hopefully return back to work next week.

But we have two cruises coming up (June & August) There will be days on both cruises that we will be at the beach. I'm worried about walking through the sand on the beach and how it's going to affect my knee. Even though my knee is on the mend, it's not 100% yet and I'm worried about injuring even more.

Has anyone ever had to deal with this? I thought things were looking up for me in terms of recovery and then I go and have this thought run through my head. LOL

I'm not really a beach person that much (I never go when I'm home), but when we're down in the Carribbean you can't help but go in that water and enjoy it. It's so beautiful. So I really can't see myself just sitting on the beach watching everyone else enjoy the water. Have you ever found yourself in a similar situation? How did you manage walking in the sand?

I would say that you probably want to wear a "real" waterproof shoe like a Keen or Teva sandal rather than a flip flop or those cheap pool shoes or even going barefoot. That should give your foot more support which should create less pressure on your knee.

If there's any waves or crashing surf, I would not go in the water at all. It would mess w/ your stability/balance. When I was in Nassau, at the hotel we bought a day pass at, the water was flat as a pancake. I just walked out and sat down. :) I don't know if it's like that everywhere in the Caribbean or not.

Walking in the sand wasn't that much of a problem for my damaged knee but I couldn't handle even a minimal amount of water currents. It was too hard to keep my balance.

(first, the rule)

Second - This would be a better question for your physical therapist and/or your doctor. They can assess how unstable your knee is and then determine if you will do damage on the beach.

If your knee is not stable enough, they can fit you with a patella stabilizing brace to help you out.

DD has a very loose knee cap. She does a year round sport that does a lot of twisting. Her ortho fit her with a brace that has a gel support that surrounds the knee cap to keep it in place and stable.

Ask your ortho on your next appointment how you knee will hold up on the beach.

Oh wow, never thought of the water currents. Great, another thing to worry about. LOL I'll ask the doctor about this stuff when I go on Thursday.

I had knee surgery in February 2010 and went to the beach in February 2011 and my knee was so swollen that night after walking in the sand. You might want to wear tennis shoes to walk to where you plan on parking yourself for the day and limit the time you spend going between the water and your towel. I would also suggest bringing something you can put ice in to ice your knee when you get back to your stateroom.
