Well the army isn't letting DH come home between training assignments, so he will sit in New York for 5 days before hitting Fort Brag (and than Iraq). He called and asked me to come out and see him so I AM!! I've never been to NY before so I'm looking forward to it plus spending some grownup time with him before he leaves. So I have some ?? for my dis friends. I will fly in the day before him and stay at a hotel in EWR and than when he flies in the army is putting him up at the Staten Island Hotel. It sounds like this is a nice place. My ? is should I rent a car to get around? I've heard horror stories about driving and parking in NY. Do taxis cost the national debt to take? What should we see? Is it possible to see a broadway show without any advance purchace and not ransom my youngest??? Any help/advice greatly needed. I leave in a week!! No time to plan.

Well its Statan Island...thats not really NY, like in NYC.....The mass transit isn't like it is in NYC, you could take a train from there to the city I think. You can get broadway tickets the day of the show at the TKTS booth in Times Square, they are half price! Line is usually long but moves fast and last time I went it was cash only.

I have only seen the staten island hotel from the outside, looks pretty nice and decent. Is he being processed through fort wadsworth, I think that is the name of it. My dh is a gideon and I know they give bibles to all the servicemen there before they leave. We live too far away to go to that though. You can do so many things in NY. I think they have the TCKTS outlet or something like that for same day show tickets. You could take a carriage ride, go to a museum etc. Have a nice meal. Bring your pocketbook etc. Window shop etc. Take the circleline boat around manhattan. I really dont know what the taxi price would be. You might want to look into a limo/towncar service and compare rates etc. The traffic is unreal. At least you wont be here during the convention. I avoid the city at all costs. Havent even seen our friends dd and she is 3 now. We drive to nj though, that is when I see the hotel. Does the hotel have a conceirge etc. that you can get in contact with and see if they have any special deals/relationships/packages etc. Good luck and god speed to your dh and the sacrifice he is making on our behalf.

I know Staten Island isn't NY city...but I have heard its a quick ferry ride over to Manhatten...I guess I'm looking at it like staying offsite at disney :earsgirl: ...Yes he is doing some work at Fort Wadsworth *its where the unit thats "borrowing him" for the next year.is from, but they will process out of Bragg.

I don't know much about NYC, but I wanted to tell you to have a good time and tell your DH he will have alot of people in the USA thinking of him and praying for his safekeeping until he returns.:D

I am so happy for you!:D DH and I are planning for me to fly to him before he leaves for Iraq too, in a few weeks! Will leave the kids here-can't have them go through those goodbyes again anyway.
I have no advice, just wanted to share in your joy! :Pinkbounc Hope you have a great time!

Yes, you can take the Staten Island Ferry over (I think it is FREE). You can buy ticktets for Broadway shows right at the theater on the day of the performance - go early. You will pay regular price for the tickets (not half-price), but it is worth it because you don't have to waste precious time standing in the long line at "TKTS".
Have fun. We are going to NYC in 10 days - can hardly wait! :)

To get to NYC from SI you either have to take the ferry, it's not free, but not expensive. SI is nothing like the city, but the roads are congested and crappy. (I lived there for almost 6 years). There are now a couple hotels on the Island, which is he staying at? Can you stay with him there? There are tons of things to do in the city.

Enjoy your time with your husband and give him a big thanks from our family.

first of all, Staten Island is part of NYC -- NYC is all five boroughs, not just Manhattan.

can't help you too much with Staten Island, I seldom go there. there is some mass transit, but I usually use a car.

the Staten Island Ferry IS free -- they used to charge $.25 round trip, it wasn't worth the effort. it lets you off on Water Street, right near Battery Park.

most of the tourist attractions are in the midtown area. the gfastest way to get uptown is to take the subway. there's a subway station for the 7th avenue line right at the ferry terminal. taxis do cost a fortune, so unless you're extremely uncomfortable taking the subway -- or it's late in the evening -- I'd take the subway.

things to do downtown -- near the ferry terminal -- include

-- you're right by the ferry to the Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island. the statue is reopning this week.

-- you can walk up to Ground Zero. there's a temporary memorial. there isn't all that much to see, though -- maybe you can visit on your way to somewhere else (you can pick up the subway on church street)n -- though I hear St. Paul's has a tour of the church set up now -- that church was a staging area for the resscue/recovery effort.

-- the South Street Seaport -- another nice place to stop on your way to somewhere else. little secret -- there's a TKTS booth in the Seaport, it opens at 11 am. and get this -- if you want to see a wednesday matinee, you can buy tickets at the seaport on tuesday --smae for weekend matinees.

--chinatown.

midtown -- everyone wants to go to the Empire State building, Rockefeller Center and times Square. you might also like Central Park and some of the museums.
