I'm leaving 9/2 for my visit to HHI with a DVC member friend, her sister, BIL and 17 mth old. My friend and I definately want to do the kayaking and probably will try at least one of the nature walks. I stayed at Sea Pines YEARS ago and really enjoyed my time there.
I would recommend VB highly for those looking for a relaxing beach vacation. We did it last summer and it was just great!

I was born in Savannah and still have several relatives there. Unfortunately, we always miss out on the tourist stuff, too!

I would suggest taking one of those neat trolley tours around Savannah. There is some really cool history there!

Also, don't know if your kids would be interested - but they also have tours at night that cover all the really cool ghost stories. I always wanna go on one, but my oldest I think would be scared. My family has several plots at Bonaventure, that place is really cool looking.

What about eating at The Pirates House? Kinda cheesy, but neat for the kids...

Just a note about Paula Deen's.....they don't take reservations. It's first come, first serve. When we picked up the Trolley tour last November, they said people line up around 10 am for lunch. I would call ahead for info. DH and I went 10 years ago and did the river walk...very nice. They have the best pralines down there! Juliette Lowe's (founder of Girl Scouts) house is also in Savannah. If you can, try to pick up a walking tour. The trolley tour was nice for an overall view, but there's wasn't much time to actually get out and walk around. Of course, we hit it on Veteran's Day, so there was a parade and I think things closed earlier because it was off season.

We are looking forward to 1st time trip to HH and know that we will enjoy Disneys resort(like we do all the others).

We know of some of the activities around the resort but wondered what things we should definitely hit in the surrounding area for 1st timers. We homeschool so we feel we can get some educational, historical learning while having fun stuff in for the kids. Any suggestions in this regard would be great!

Also, we are daytripping to Savannah, one so DD can eat at Paula Deens, but also to take in the sights at the historical places. We would probably concentrate on the Civil War era, so any suggestions here would be great also, bearing in mind we only have 1 day to do this. So again, the highlights would be helpful. Forts, houses, battle areas, etc. I googled and there seems to be a lot so we want to see what will give us the most we can take in.

If you are coming before October, remember it is hot and muggy here. It can rain any day of the week at a moments notice and be Sunny at the same time. (Actually the weather here is very much like WDW, epecially POR)

Paula Deen's......call ahead and make a reservation as soon as you can 912.233.2600. I called down there earlier today for a customer and they are advertising Priority Seating on their phone message. You'll need it! Also, go to City Market and eat at Vinny Van GoGo's. Pizza at it's best. They do not take plastic. Cash ONLY! There are several restaurants on the river that are quite good (we Like the River House) and there is a free boatride over to the Weston for a nice little ride.

Ft Pulaski it very interesting and will take up an afternoon. Ft Jackson...on the way to Ft Pulaski can also be interesting, but, would hardly take up a few hours.

We're going to stay at HH this Winter. It's the only time to be there!

The Dolphin cruise is booked thru the resort. The tour operator is Low Country Tours- who also offer fishing excursions. They do a great job. The resort also offers kayaking. All of these activities take place in the Broad Creek Marsh which is a tidal marsh that cuts thru HH itself.

The resort does have it's own naturalist who offers shelling tours to Pinckney Island as well as marsh adventures and beach combing programs for all ages. All of these programs (and many, many more) are offered thru the resort recreation dept and can be booked at the resort during your time there.

We've seen Dolphin, sea otters and even manatee within a few feet of the resort in the marsh as well as a wide variety of sea birds and osprey (some guests were "treated" to the site of an osprey dismembering a rabbit while perched at the top of the Live Oak Lodge (the check-in building at the resort).

Thanks for all the info... I think I will pass on kayaking though... I am not real keen on alligators or snakes We take the Amtrak Autotrain from Lorton, VA to Sanford Fla. on our trips down their and there is an Osprey nest on top of a very tall light pole at the Sanford station... it has been there for many years. We have never arrived at their dinner time though. Never had rabbit either... Probably taskes like chicken.

For the most part, time waiting depends on WHEN you come. Most places on RiverSt are slower during the week.

If not anything else, there is an OutBack up on the Bluff on Bay St. There are LOTS of places to eat in Downtown Savannah.

In fact, we just drove down there this afternoon. There was some event going on with booths and things.

OK, got more ??s, this time pertaining to the resort in particular. My MIL is going with us and has recently had foot surgery. We are staying in a 2 bed and it will be very difficult for her to climb stairs. If we request a 2 bed in the Live Oak Lodge, are these rooms much different than the other 2 beds?

So if I understand you correctly it is not directly on the beach..that is a bummer!!!!!!!

I know, bummer for me too. If it was just DH and I, we really wouldn't care (too much) about being on the beach. Our three kids LOVE the beach. I'm talking they could spend all day there. Whenever we do our summer vacation in the Carolinas we always book a hotel or house that is right on the beach.

My kids are spoiled! I remember when I was a kid we rented a house in Stone Harbour NJ for the summer and it was on the bay side. My parents wanted the dock in the back of the house for my little brother and his friend to play with their dumb crab traps and row boat. We had to *horrors* DRIVE to the beach. At 14, this put a damper on my entire summer. Maybe the memory of that is what stopped me from adding on points there! We had considered it until we found out is was not on the beach.

It does look like an awesome resort though. I just wish it was next to the Marriot on the beach. We've stayed there and it's a great location. I guess you can't have everything though!
