Our son lived there for a bit and we just love it there. Hank's is one of the absolute best places to eat, Poogan's Porch, Jestine's for traditional old-style cooking but the owner is a bit of a snob, brunch at the Vendue Inn (if they still do it!) is very good also. At the end of the block where the slave market is, there is a lovely hotel that actually has a doorman outside all the time and the restaurant is right inside...you can see it through the windows. We have *not* eaten there but if you go inside and take the elevator to the roof, there is a bar up there that looks out over the city. >>
We've eaten at Poogan's Porch. It was good, but a little too crowded and busy for me.
Hotel with the doorman near the old Market - do you mean the Planter's Inn? They have a restaurant - the Peninsula Grill. I loved it there. Good food, great service and just very attentive wait staff. My friend wanted to try several wines before selecting a bottle and the bar tender was able to let her test several that are also by the glass.
Hyman's Seafood - we always do a lunch here. lots of atmosphere and boiled peanuts (hate boiled peanuts!) and hush puppies. Can't go wrong with fresh shrimp in Charleston!
I've eaten at many places in Charleston but my memory is slipping for names. I will update when I can remember the names.
