Well as the title says, I'm leaving Sat. to go to Maine, then Canada. For the life of me, dh and I cannot find our registration for the car. I have the insurance cards, and the registration on the windsheild. I have the Title to the car also.

Do I need to take off and run to motor vehicle?

I googled and googled and couldn't find the answer so I thought I'd ask here, where I always get great help.

when we went to Niagara Falls, Canada in June they didn't ask about registration either coming or going

You don't need it, but make sure you have your passport or enhanced driver's license. I was pulled over for passing a nonexistent stop sign in Ontario once in college and I was asked for my registration. It's always a good idea to have it though.

If you are pulled over in Canada you will be asked for license and registration. And Yes, Canadian police have access to the US vehicle ownership database.

Failure to provide registration is a $250 fine. If the registration information is not accurate (say the same name, but a different address) it's a $250 fine.

might be a smart idea to pick it up -- and avoid the $500 fine i got.

Don't leave home without the registration, and whatever you do keep it in the glove box until you get to the border. Just last week my DS was driving a rental from Michigan to Toronto, and he left his temporary registration on the passenger seat. BIG MISTAKE ! When he opened the window on the highway, the registration flew out!!!!! He worried all the way to the border, and back. Lucky for him he was not asked to produce it.
The PP's are right; if you ever got pulled over you would definitely need the registration. It would be worth the peace of mind to do that DMV run before you leave. Have a safe trip.:)

Thank you everyone I knew I could get the answers here. Really an amazing forum.
I'm running out this morning to get it, I don't want to stress about it.:)

I'll be sure to put it in my glove compartment.

I believe that some DVM's allow you to reprint it online. It's worth a try.

Not sure if this is still the case, but when we went to Canada a few years ago I phoned my insurance company just to find out if there was anything special I needed to know before crossing the border. I was glad I did.

I was told I needed a special insurance card that met Canadian requirements. No additional charge, but my insurance company told me I would have to produce the special card if stopped and asked, in addition to my normal registration.

You won't need it to cross the border but you will need it on the off chance that you get stopped by the cops for something. I would definitely pick it up!

Msmayor is correct that you should request a Canadian ID card from your car insurance provider. I work for a major insurer and this is a definite.

Do you not need your registration in your when driving around in the US? I never owned a car when living in the US and just assumed it was the same as here (where I always have registration and insurance in the glove box).

I would get a copy before you go.

Here in NJ if you get stopped for any reason, you will need to show all 3 documents or else you will get a nice big fat fine.
