Going Rate For Babysitters????

We used to pay around $10 per hour. However, if the job was by the week, it was much less.

I remember when I was 12 I babysat two kids all night (it wasn't supposed to be all night, but anyway) and I got $5. :rotfl: I was so happy with that $5. It was the first time I ever babysat and I had no idea it should have been so much more.

When I was older, I watched two kids during the summer and got paid $90 per week. That was an easy job because the kids were 8 and 10 and they had a pool. We swam all summer long.

WOW I'm glad I was a regular babysitter for the family I helped.

It was always the second Saturday of the month plus a couple of weekends but I was to spend the night at the house with the kids who, on my last babysit, were a 12 year old boy and two girls 11 and 5. The girls were a dream and the boy was even better because he had a crush on me.

The shifts were usually 6PM-8AM and I'd get paid $20/hour which came to $280... they usually just rounded it up to $300. I always knew I got overpaid but hey, I'm not complaining and the family didn't care, they knew their kids were in great hands!

Hey, you're making my $5 for the night babysitting job look bad.:rotfl:

I would have loved to have had the job you did though. That sounds like a babysitter's dream job.

Last summer I babysat for a friend of my moms. It was two days a week, 7am-4pm for 2 girls (aged 2.5 and 6) and got $50/day... worked out to about $5.50 an hour or so, but it was pretty easy. They slept til about 10am, then watched cartoons til lunch time. After lunch, we either went to the park or to swimming lessons, depending on the day, until their mom or dad came home. :thumbsup2

Hey money is money :) And, when I started out, I did it for free for my social studies teacher with a friend because she was a teacher's pet and I just did it because I had nothing else to do.

It really was a dream job, and it helped a lot in high school. They are an amazing family that I've known since I was really little so it may have something to do with it, but I'm so thankful they did for me what they did.

I used to babysit for 2 families 3 or 4 times a month until i moved and now I have 5 or 6 families that I babysit for.

My rates are:
1-2 children-$12/hour
3 children- $15/hour
4 children- $18/hour

The two families that i used to babysit for had 3 and 4 kids so i was making 15 or 18/hour on the weekends. Most nights I averaged about $100/night.

Now, all the families i babysit for have 1 or 2 kids so I average about $40 during the day and $80 at night.

Baby sitting in a group setting is different. If you were to break down the cost of childcare to an hourly rate of all the tuitions--it would be a lot.

I lower my per sitter cost if I have multiple sitters. It ends up costing me more though when you add them up.

It is not a group setting, it is for one family, 2 kids in their home. They are siblings of a friend of his and she is in college this year so he is watching them after school and on school holidays.

Around here (Boston area) the going rate is anywhere between $10 - $15.

$10 = younger girls

$15 = college students

I have two older kids too (10 and 13) and that's what we pay, even if the kids are asleep when they arrive.

I babysat 3 kids in high school and was paid $8/ hour. The kids I babysat were aged: 3, 5, and 11. My goodness were they a handful. I babysat them usually from 3pm-11pm so I gave the two littlest ones baths, made dinner, helped the 11 yo with homework, put them to bed, etc. I was basically their mother .

If you are requiring that much out of a babysitter and can afford to, please pay a little more than $8 as that is a full blown, exhausting job!

I think $8-10 an hour is good enough for 1-2 kids but if you have more than 2 kids, espeically little ones, you might want to pay a bit more.

Good luck OP!

that's very close to what i charge! it amazes me that people complain about the price of child care but don't bat an eye at the price they are paying to see a movie and eat dinner:rolleyes:

btw- congrats on your weight loss!

I pay my sitter $10/hour. :goodvibes

I do bat an eye at the cost of movies, though. It's obscene what they charge for admission and we won't even mention the concessions. ;)

We usually go see the bargain matinee, or even the dreaded dollar theater - lol. Actually, the last movie we saw was at the dollar theater, and the crowd was no worse (no more rude, I mean - in fact, they were actually better!) than we when paid Big Bucks to see something when it first came out. And we took our kids with us, so it was a very cheap evening indeed. :thumbsup2

My statement wasn't meant at anyone imparticular. But i see what you are saying and I agree a dollar movie is just as good as a 12 dollar movie. where i live there is no dollar movies. no where close anyway lol.

i speak from the experiences I have had in my area. big money here (not me..but almost everyone else lol). these people have SO much money, and when I sit fr them , they go to VERY expensive restaurants for the most part. they do not think twice about what they paid for dinner, tip, wine and valet parking, but then roll their eyes when it comes time to pay me.. It always amazes me! You just spent 400+ out and you're worried about the 75 you owe me lol

I'd like to say this occurrence is a rarity, but it's not around here ;/

We pay our nanny $7/hour. Wish we could afford more. She cooks, cleans, does yard work, drives the kids to/from school/activities. She is an angel! Worth far more then we could ever pay her!

Thank You!

Yeah, i'm surprised about the same thing. I used ot work at a preschool daycare and we would always hear parents complain to each other about paying $10/hr to babysit but they were going to plays and to fancy dinners but couldn't pay $10/hour:confused3

Luckily, I've never had that problem with anyone i've babysat for. I probably wouldn't babysit for them if they were like that.

Most of the time when the last 2 families i babysat for went out it was usually to others peoples houses, hospital events (one was a doctor) or events at our synagogue.

I pay my sitter $15.00 an hour for watching my 14 month old, but if my 5 yr old is there it is the same rate - $15.00 an hour. I'll round up at the end of the night, though.

She's the ONLY person I trust other than the grandmas to watch my kids, so she is worth the $$. I totally trust that she will treat my kids very well. For example, if my 14 month old is crying in her crib, she will rock her to sleep, not just leave her cry. She is extremely patient and I can tell she cares about my kids.
