Going from really long hair to short hair

I just cut off 24"+ last week (to donate). My hair is shoulder length now with layers, which I've never had. I'm happy that I made the decision to cut it, though I think one of my girls was slightly traumatized when she came home from school and saw what I'd had done. She cried and asked, "Mom, why did you do that?" She's over it now and actually says she loves my hair this way, so I think it was just the initial shock.

I feel like the long hair aged me and it was becoming a pain to maintain.

I'm now debating whether to start coloring or not.

I've just done this! My hair was mid-back and I got it cut really short, I mean shaved and everything in the back and sides. I find it easier to take care of and style, I have never been able to style long hair nicely and always wound up just putting it up into a ponytail. Now I just throw a dab of gel on it and blow it dry with a round brush-it takes maybe 5 to 10 minutes and bam! I'm ready to go.

I alternate between long and short. I'll cut it short, like pixie short (sometimes I have to get there in two or three cuts so as not to scare DH too much, bless his heart) then grow it to mid back, then cut it short again. I'm a diver and it's just easier with it short or long enough to put in a braid. Of course, that in between time when it's growing back out is a pain. I get bored easily, I change my color just about every time I color it, which is every 5 weeks. Nothing drastic just various shades of light, medium golden brown, which always turn red anyway so I don't know why I don't just use red.

I just did a major cut last week. I have been going shorter each time I got my hair cut and last week I finally said - cut it off. It's a cute pixie and I love it! Takes me 5 mintues and a little sculpting goop and I'm done! No regrets here! It's only hair and it does grow back :-)

I got a pixie cut a year ago and wish I'd done it sooner. The only thing I don't like is having to go back so regularly for maintenance (I just hate small talk and I hate being asked to buy products I don't want, but I also hate looking for new stylists, blah). It's worth it though. I think it looks cute, it dries so fast, and it's easy to manage in the mornings. I never loved the way my hair looked when it was long, and it was so thick and heavy.

When I first got it all chopped off, it was weird for a couple of weeks. Totally used to it now and regret being so nervous about it for years beforehand. I don't see myself having long hair again, ever.

I'm getting more used to the short hair. Not quite so in shock anymore. It was certainly a lot quicker to wash and fluff up. But, I'm still not sure if I'll keep it short. I have several weeks though before it would need to be trimmed if I want to keep it like this.
