We are planning a trip in July 2004. I decided to change our reservations from Pop Century to Animal Kingdom Lodge. We have never been to either. Actually, I haven't been to Disney since I was twelve and my husband and 2 children (9yo and 4yo) have never been.

Is this a mistake? What are the benefits of AKL vs PC? Would you recommend getting a bunk bed for the kids vs a queen bed?

Any suggestions?:Pinkbounc

Our problem when we stay at AKL is that I usually can't get DH to leave the hotel!!!

The animals are amazing, and the whole hotel is SO interesting!!

Enjoy your stay!!!

I think you made the right choice!! AKL is a wonderful resort with so many places to explore and your children will love the animals. We stayed at AKL last trip and was so happy we decided to stay there. My 2 DS (9 and 16) both loved everything about it and wanted to go back this trip (June 3 - 11) but we decided on BC. I will miss the animals, though.....Bunk beds would work well for you. My 2 boys can't get any sleep in the same bed. Have a great time!!

I know PC has been getting alot of positive reviews, but you can't compare it to the AKL.

If you can afford AKL, I wouldn't hesitate!::yes::

All of the above posters are correct!
Your children will love it and mostly,
REMEMBER the "animal" trip!::yes::

Both resorts are excellent choices, and I'm sure you would enjoy your stay at either.

Pop Century is a good choice for a Value resort, and provides a decent room at a value price.

Animal Kingdom Lodge adds a lot of deluxe amenities, and extras, but of course, also comes at a deluxe price. If the amenities and atmosphere are worth the extra price, then by all means, AKL is right for you. :)

Yes, I believe it will be a mistake switching from Pop Century to AKL. Once you do you never be able to go back to a value. Switching to Club level would be an even bigger mistake, god forbid you suffer through that!:p

What view did you select at AKL - Standard or Water or Savannah?

thanks

Thanks for all the info...I feel better about switching. I know it is more money but we won't be able to go back soon so I want the trip to really stick in the minds of my kids.

I chose a standard view in hopes that we may be able to upgrade to savannah once there.

The kids are so anxious to see the animals! So am I!!!

I think I'm going to see about trying to getting a bunkbed. I think it may save me a headache in the long run.;)

The bunks are a winner, no doubt!

And, if no one has done this........

i stayed at CBR (moderate) during my trip in Sept.03. i visited AKL and ate at Boma and just fell in love with AKL. is staying there really worth the money?
the hotel is gorgeous and the common spaces are amazing. which you can enjoy of course by just being a visitor. what are the real benefits to staying there?

one thing i enjoyed about CBR were the hammocks on the beach. i know they don't have those a AKL.

If you can, possibly with a code or AP rate, please book a savannah view room! I know many people have been upgraded, but many people have also not been. Obviously go with standard only if you're already stretching your budget. You do't want to worry about every penny because you overbooked yourself on your hotel room. Plenty of places to spend those pennies at Disney!

That being said, you're going to love the hotel! You might not even want to leave for the parks! Being that you have a younger child with you, you'll all feel good about your down times at the resort since there is so much to offer activity wise, plus those views!

Happy planning!

We usually stay at the All Stars. I havebeen dying to stay at the Poly and also CBR. The funny thing is my husband has been asking why we dont stay at the AKL. he is so dying to stay there. im afraid if we do , we will never want to go back to the all stars. lol. its just so so exp. im not sure. i was thinking if we go this summer of maybe surprising him and staying at the all stars 3 - 4 and then the lodge maybe 3 - 4 days. im just not sure about the price though, we take the train from Ma. so i usually book hotel for 8 - 9 nts. so AKL would be to much $ for that long,. But ill check on the price, cause i would love to surprise him and dd.

Warning - once you stay at a deluxe you are ruined for life! AKL was worth every exorbitant cent I paid. Poor DH is working 16 hours of OT per payperiod for the next month to pay for our upgrade to concierge!

You are sooo doing the right thing.

I have never stayed at the value resorts but even compared to the other deluxe resorts, the AKL is a winner! We stayed there last summer with our 3 yo daughter and she loved it (so did we). There was nothing like waking up in the morning and seeing giraffes and zebras 20 ft. from your window.

That leads me to another point that someone else already mentioned; if you can afford it, book a savannah view room (I think we paid $30 more a night). I heard a tale that new rates were coming out at the end of this month-- I don't know if that's really true though. You should check occasionally w/ mousesavers.com; she has one of the best sites around for Disney info and for ways to get discounts at the Disney resorts.

If you book a savannah view, ask for either Kudo trail or Zebra trail interior savanannah views (inside the circle the hotel makes if you look at a map). This is where most of the animals seemed to congregate, especially the giraffes. Also, you should take your kids outside at night (the CMs will tell you where) to look at the animals thru night vision goggles-- very cool.

The AKL also has a really nice zero-entry pool which my daughter really liked (yet was not so full of kids that you were getting splashed and shoved around all of the time).

The only downside is that you probably need to rent a car, it is easier and faster to get to the parks then when you have to wait for the buses (I generally think this is true for all of the resorts though, no matter what transportation system they're on).

Hope you enjoy your stay; I don't think you'll regret your choice for one minute!
