We were going to go to Disneyland mid December, but due to not able to get the time off work, we had to change our plans. We are going Jan 2 thru the 7th. I am just concerned, it will be crazy crowded. Does that week, the parks reach capacity? Any tips would be helpful, too

Thanks

We'll be there from the 29th Dec - 5th Jan. I'm expecting it to be brutal crowd -wise, so will follow the thread for tips :)

This year a large group of APs will lose access to the 2 weeks holiday period, so it's hard to say exactly how much more crowded the week after will be next year. The lower level APs are blocked until the 3rd, with the holidays likely ending 1/3 and Dia de los Reyes happening that week you can expect it to be extremely crowded.

Many schools in the Southwest don't end their Christmas/Winter Break until after Three Kings Day (January 6th, the 12th day of Christmas), especially those who have family in other countries, they go there to celebrate the holidays and don't care too much if their kids miss a few days of school. And since public schools get paid by the State based on a per student present per day formula, any unexcused absence costs them money, and the shift in the calendar was made to prevent these losses. But there are so many different school districts in the area (Heck, the city of Anaheim has 8 separate school districts for K-12 education), calendars do vary.

A similar issue with Spring/Easter Break, and some districts now get 2 weeks off, or for planning and educational reasons, have switched to a fixed week off (such as after 10 weeks of the semester). So the traditional week and before Easter Sunday tends to be the busiest, But Disney does start extending hours and increasing staffing from the 2nd week of March to late April.

So Disney does offer extended hours for the first week of January, due to the expected large crowds. Add to that the AP issues, with many locals having them and the blockout dates for some are lifted, you do get that double whammy.

I think it will be crazy crowded that week. Seems like a lot of schools, including phoenix, are still off that week and ap'so open back up. I know we are planning on going then.

I know, we live in the Phoenix valley. I was thinking of going the following week, but I do not want the kids to miss a week is school.
We are planing 5 days at the park, in stead of 4,.due to the crowds. We frequent Disneyland, we just try to avoid peak times. We are celebrating a special bday this trip, and that is why we are going. Our main goal is to get to the parks early!!

All the first part of the second week should be decent, but Monday, January 16th is a Federal Holiday (Martin Luther King, Jr. Day) and the weekend will host the Disneyland Star Wars 1/2 Marathon (main event is held Sunday morning, 1/15) but related events start on Wednesday January 12th. So you have the double whammy of a Holiday weekend, and the sold out Marathon events held at Disneyland, and you will get large crowds, and higher hotel room prices.

And the third week of January gets worse, not better.

The largest Convention in Anaheim, the NAMM Show is being held January 19th through the 22nd. This private event attendance is around 100,000 attendees, and then add to that families and others that travel with the attended and goes do things during the convention, such as visiting Disneyland and other tourist attractions.

And some companies that are trying to sell products/services hold events, and even rent out parts of the Disneyland parks. One big impact is the hiring of the Hyperion Theater for a major concert, but then some of the Downtown Disney restaurants also get rented out. Hotel rates are high, park attendance is high and traffic is bad. And some visitors take on a day or two on either side of the event, so the attendee can also check out the sights and attractions.

So what was a quite month a decade ago or so, January has become a very busy time in the parks.
