Yeh! Just asked DH if we could go camping on Saturday. DD makes her First Holy Communion and I took the whole weekend off(this does not happen often, at least off and staying home). Well Saturday we can go away and come back on Sunday. Only comments from DH was ,"good idea, do you really want to take the pup?" Well "Yes!" He's still a little niffed about the trip in December when the camper didn't even make it to GA. I said well it should be fixed, so why not. Why keep it if we're not going to use it. I don't mind camping , I love to camp, I would just rather be in a camper than on the ground in a tent. Just not enough room in the tent for all 7 of us. Call me a scardy cat, but I don't want to sleep in one tent with a few of the kids and him in the other with a couple.

Should I expect any trouble with the pup. They built a new spindel for the right tire? Did't rebuild the axel, just the spindle.
Anyway I am excited, I want to use my camper just once.

I'm not sure what your original problem was but it sounds like you may have spun the bearings and damaged the spindle if they replaced it. Unlike a car axel which drives the wheels, the axel on a PUP is just something for the spindle and suspension to attach to. The wheel and bearings run on the spindle so if they replaced or rebuilt it things should be OK.

It sounds like you won't be getting too far from home anyway, so this would be a good time to test it out, make sure everything works well, and then you can feel good about taking it back to the fort!

The pup will be fine......

My daughter had First Communion last Sunday.....Congrats to your DD.......

Absolutely correct! The axle is nothing but a piece of steel tubing. The spindle, is just attached to the ends. The the hub with the bearings rides on it. It should be fine. This will be a good test. just be sure the bearings are greased, and feel of the hub when you get where you are going be sure it isn't too hot!

Absolutely fine with the new spindle, probably going to last quite a while.

I ended up picking up a little pen style infrared thermometer at a local hardware store to check the temperature of my wheels near the bearings when travelling. Mainly to give me that sense of comfort and chase away the nagging fears while travelling. I figure that as long as each wheel is the same temperature plus or minus a few degrees then we're in good shape.

They can be pretty cheap if you shop around (I think mine was about $20) and are pretty accurate. I was even checking the kids temps this year during flu season when we broke our regular thermometer (Yep - my kids really wonder what happened to the rest of my marbles too!)

Well it looks like we're staying home. We got hit really hard by the storms last night and we're expecting more Saturday into Sunday. No way do I want to be out in that! 4 tornados last night, 5 kids in a powder room was bad enough, can't imagine camping with anything close to that, don't even want rain while I camp. Those were some scary storms!
Thanks for the info. I'll tell DH. I wish we knew about checking the temps before our attempted trip to DW in December. Is there such a book...Camping in a PUP for Dummies.

Good luck, hope you get a chance to test the new bearings on the camper soon.

I found the type of infrared thermometer that we have on Yahoo Shopping for about $19. It is the size of a small Sharpie marker and uses button style batteries.
