gofundme accounts

I have never contributed to a gofundme account, but I have kickstarted a couple of things. I would only contribute if I was sure I knew the situation of those involved.

As an aside, my stepson has some friends that did a gofundme to travel around north and south America in a bus. They made the money they wanted and they partied their way around for a year, a group of about 15 20-somethings. No way I'm contributing a dime to that.

I'm such a sucker for a good story. Medical bills, I'll help. College for a smart kid who only got minimal assistance? I'm good.

For trips? No. EVERYONE would love to quit work and travel and have someone else pay. I also don't donate to high school trips.

I can see some charity reasons for starting these accounts....help with medical bills and charity drives for families who may need temp assistant because of some tragic event or loss.

Do not agree with the ones to help pay for college, travel, and just whatever. I ignore those requests.

I have seen too many set up for a tragedy-and the person setting up is not associated with the tragedy and just keeps the money

No way I would contribute to any of them

I have only given to two that I personally know.
One was a childhood friend whose son was diagnosed with cancer. It was for medical bills/lost time at work.

The other was a childhood friend whose daughter has CP/brain damage. She just asked for a few hundred dollars to buy a device to help her sit up in grocery cart. She got more money than asked, so she stated she was going to buy another device. Then she shut down the page when she reached that amount. (She had pics on FB of the items and her daughter using it).

There was another woman I knew who started one to get her implants removed. The story was that they were causing her pain for years, but insurance wouldn't cover it. Sorry, didn't buy that insurance wouldn't cover it if they were actually harming her. Plus, she could have been saving for years, but she had pictures of her fancy looking 4th wedding on FB.

What are your thoughts? Most of the ones I have seen are for medical purposes when families can not afford medical bills. Usually a family friend or an extended family member starts it. There is one for a guy in Detroit that walks 21 miles to work every day that a totall stranger started. I think couples have used them for honeymoon funding. A local mom just started one so she could send her 18 year old to an alcohol rehab place in Argentina (we live in Michigan).

I'm just curious as to what others think.

I was solicited once by a friend who was trying to raise funds for a family vacation. I declined the invitation to donate.

I would have helped if it was for extraordinary expenses.

I have donated to a couple, but I actually knew the people in real life.
The one that makes my blood boil is a gofundme started by Candace Cameron (Full House) to pay for her son's hockey season. REALLY? It was fully funded in a couple hours.

Well why not? I suppose she knew there would be enough suckers willing to fund her son's hockey expenses.

I've never given to one and probably never will. I've only been solicited twice. One was for a cheerleaders group visit to Disney, and the other was for college expenses.

WHAT?! Her husband is/was? a NHL player! Geez!!
