I know the movie comes out next week. Wondering who has read the book. I have read The Killer Angels, does this take place right before Gettysburg?

Patrick, did you see "Gettysburg"?

I am taking DH to see this next week. He LOVES this kind of movie.;)

The book covers the period from right before the war, through the battles of First Manassas (Bull Run), Antietam and Fredricksburg.

I can't wait to see it!

I heard that they wanted to cut down on the running time of the movie, so they're not showing Antietam. I hope that's not true. I don't think I want to see the movie if that's the case.

Found this on the internet...

Based on the events leading up to the Battle of Gettysburg, spotlighting events in the Eastern Theater of the American Civil War. It follows the personal struggles and triumphs of Robert E. Lee, James Longstreet, Joshua Chamberlain, Winfield Scott Hancock, and it's main figure: Thomas J. "Stonewall" Jackson, through their own eyes. As the story moves from John Brown's Raid at Harper's Ferry to Second Manassas, Antietam, Fredericksburg, Chancellorsville, and finally as a climax Stonewall Jackson's tragic death.

The theatrical running time is supposed to be around 3½ hours, with the directors cut on DVD being almost two hours longer. I can see them cutting Antietam, but they would really need to keep the rest. Manassas (I think the article meant First, not Second Manassas) as that is where the "Stonewall" legend was born and was the opening battle of the war. You would need Fredricksburg as that was one of the major low points for the Union and the first Major battle for Joshua Chamberlain (he was at Antietam but his Regiment, the 20th Maine, was in reserve and didn't see action). Chancellorsville was also a Union low point, coming just a couple of months before Gettysburg, and was also where Stonwall Jackson was fatally wounded. The book ends with his death scene after the battle.

I guess we'll know how much is true this coming Friday :D

Thanks for posting all that info!

It's interesting because when I was in 3rd-5th grade I was extremely interested in the Civil War, but now I'm more interested in the Revolution.

That said, I think the movie looks phenominal & I'm sure it will get quite a bit in ticket sales, including at least 1 from me. :)
