Well today was 4th of July and we had a long day ahead of us as Mount St Helens was one way in and the same way out, which is quite a detour really. So as usual we were up early, packed and ready to go! We went through Portland and were soon into Washington state and the first view of Mount St Helens, which was breathtaking as it dominated the landscape.
It was a lovely day and the drive although long was interesting due to the scenery. As we got closer you could really see how the eruption in 1980 had disfigured the volcano.
Once we had parked we went into the visitor centre to watch a presentation of the eruption. Then we had a little walk to view the volcano from a different angle.
Looking across the land you could see the path the lava and hot gas cloud followed, as there was still little vegetation of any height.
Time was disappearing quickly and we needed to make it to camp, have dinner and then head into Centralia as that was the closest place for fireworks. We got to the State Fairground just as the banger racing was finishing.
The entertainment value was certainly here, watching all the locals
Then the fireworks started.
By the time it finished it was late and tomorrow was a big day as we were off to Mount Rainier to hopefully see a glacier
