My son just bought a new Go Pro camera. He bought the chest holder and is excited to record some of the rides in the park.
He also would like to take it on the waterslides.
Is there any reason why this wouldn't be allowed?
Has anyone had any trouble with wearing the camera with the chest holder and recording the rides?

Disney may have an issue with the camera on waterslides as it could damage the ride surface (no suits with metal buckles, rivets, etc. are permitted for the same reason).

Also, I can't imagine it would feel too good to have the strap rubbing against his back.

No issue with it in the parks. I'm not a big waterpark person so I can't provide advice with that. My one recommendation would be that if the camera has some type of light (even if it is small) I would put some sort of dark tape over it so as not to be distracting on dark rides.

As others said shouldn't be a problem. I have a friend that took video everywhere he went in the parks last year for a compilation video and he had no issues whatsoever.

ETA: Let us know how it goes! I've been thinking of doing the same thing with a GoPro, so it would be great to hear other experiences!

I have only used my chest harness while skiing, but unless he is in the front row, he will probably just be filming the back of the seat in front of him. Make sure he knows he can request the front seat, but just may have to wait a little but longer to board. And as PP said, cover the LCD if it has one, or turn it off (it's a battery hog anyway).

I've taken a GoPro on a few trips now. No problems in the parks except for using a selfie stick while on Dumbo. All items have to stay inside the ride vehicle! I have had mine in the pool too. It may be more comfortable to use a stick or some hand held holder in the water parks. For the slides, if they allow it at all, maybe just hold the cam (in the case) with a wrist lanyard just in case it is dropped.

used one for a week last October (vid in signature) with no problems.

had lots of fun capturing on ride video. enjoy.

We took a GoPro for the first time our August trip my DD and DNiece had a blast with it. They mainly held it. I have the best video of my DD and DH on the teacups. They take really good pics too. Much better than I expected.

Awesome, thanks for all the advice everyone! We will let you know how it goes after our trip in May!

DH loves his GoPro but uses a head strap for rides. The chest strap really doesn't get good video unless you're right up front and then it's pretty much just a 'straight ahead' view. With the head strap the camera looks where he looks. Same with 'walking around' videos. If it's crowded all you see are people's backs. Of course, a head strap probably wouldn't be a very good idea on water slides, although they do have some pretty heavy duty ones.

DS is planning on bringing his also but from what I read on another post (sorry do not know how to link) the headstrap was suggested.

Very good suggestions! DS is 6'1 so with a head strap he would get an awesome view! And so true about only seeing the backs of seats if he wears the chest strap. And the wrist strap is a great suggestion too. You guys rock.

I have a video linked in my signature from our trip last August. I used a handheld mount and found that to offer the best perspective, though I think preference for head strap vs chesty mount vs handheld is really a matter of personal taste. Personally I find it easier to shoot smooth footage with the handheld. It also depends on whether you like the first person perspective (i.e. showing what your hands are doing) or not.

Even if you're not in the front seat of a ride, you'll get a great view. The angle is wide, something like 170 degrees. It gives you a great sense of the overall environment and not just the back of someone's head.

On the water slides you are allowed to use the camera but you can't have it mounted on anything. This is true in both Blizzard Beach and Typhoon Lagoon. I handheld the camera inside its waterproof case on the slides there. I also used the Floaty Backdoor, in case I dropped it, and secured it to my wrist with a tether. I don't think the Floaty Backdoor is entirely necessary though; it's not like you couldn't scoop it off the bottom of the pool if you needed to - not like being out on open water.

If he doesn't have a spare battery, make sure to get one of those. GoPros have notoriously short battery life. You can buy 2 Wasabi brand batteries plus a charger on ebay for about $25. They last just as long as the GoPro branded batteries and are a much better value.

We just bought my son a Go Pro Hero 4 for our trip in June and he is excited to try it out. Thanks for the tips here. I would love to hear more.

+1 on the extra battery suggestion. I've used the Wasabi batteries in a few cameras now and if you get the set with a charger it's very handy.

Depending on how much you shoot, an extra memory card or two or a way to copy stuff off the camera could be useful. I usually copy to my phone or tablet (using a card reader (faster) or the GoPro App (slower)) then onto a large USB stick for safe keeping. The video files can take up a lot of space especially if you happen to use ProTune and Raw settings (I generally don't use these but if you like...). Copying off the camera also keeps your stuff safe in case the cameral is lost, stolen or broken along the way. I also don't care for the "fish eye" effect from the wide angle lens on the GoPro so I use the Medium or Narrow setting to reduce it. Those settings are still pretty wide, your mileage may vary!
