Go Digital or 35MM??

We brought all 3, camcorder, SLR and digital. I used the SLR at Animal Kingdom, because I need to zoom on the safari and animal trails. Most everywhere else we used our Fuji, tiny, 3.2 megapixel camera. We were very skeptical at first, but when we got home, we put all the pics we wanted printed, on a CD and took them to Ritz. They came out amazing. There were some places we used both cameras, and you can't tell which ones were taken with which camera. I do not care for the quality when I print them at home, even with our Sony dye-sub printer, but when I take them somewhere they are fantastic!!!

I too took only my Digital on my last trip. If I didn't have 3 small kids to chase after I may have brought my SLR too. I have been very happy with the service from Ofoto. You get to share your photos easily to friends & family. I have not been happy with CVS type places but those depend a lot on the people working there and how often they clean the chemicals.

I plan to purchase an 8 megapixel digital camera and a 4GB memory card for my upcoming vacation (and many years following), just to ensure that this trip lasts a lifetime.

I figure I can take about 320 high quality photos, which can be blown up to the sizes of movie posters without quality loss. If I reduced the size, literally thousands of photos could be stored on there.

For me, the ability to create super professional looking prints with a fairly compact camera; and then to be able to edit these pics to make them look even better; far outweighs the negatives of digital. Also, considering the high-quality (and most times cheap) online digital printing services nowadays, my prints could be framable should I so desire. Heck, even inkjet printers are starting to look professional.

BTW Staples sells great print portfolios/binders for those who prefer 8x10 sizes and higher (usually need to shoot with at least 3 megapixels). Instead of the typical and tacky vacation photos albums chock full of unorganized low quality 35mm prints, you can now treat your memories regally with individual plastic sheets for each photo.

We'll be using our digital camera as well, and bringing along the laptop to empty the memory card. I'll be able to go through all the photos from the day and delete any bad ones immediately.. this way, I'll know if I need to retake a shot! LOL *I don't want to miss anything! *grin* We'll probably buy a few disposable film cameras for the girls to use. After using a digital camera, I wouldn't want to lug around a 35mm either!

We do a combination of printing our photos ourself here at home, and taking them and having them done. Last year we spent a week in Maine, and I had over 100 photos I wanted to pring. I took them to the local Eckerd Drug Store and they did an AWESOME job on the printing. I find that when you have a large quantity to print, it's cheaper to have it done for you.. save your ink! :)

We had a cheap digital camera (2mp) on our last trip in 2002, as well as out 35mm SLR, we shot 17 rolls of film and several hundred digital pics between a trip to the beach and the world. This time we have bought a nice 4mp digital, with a 10X optical zoom, but we are still packing a serious load of film.
We have uploaded photos to ofoto.com, and are really impressed with the quality as well. We have purchased a good printer this time as well, and using the super quality settings, I was able to print 8x10 borderless pics that were flawless.
Your other option is to go 35MM and get a scanner, or take the rolls to someplace that lets you download them, or get them back on a CD. Personally, if you are serious enough to buy a decent 35mm ($300+) I would look at a 4mp camera, and one of the online photo shops.
BTW, Ofoto is doing a prepay special where you pay X amount for X# of prints. The price of prints can get as low as $.19, not bad!

Good luck
