Gmail...Now I can share the wealth!

Again I must be really thick.
What is the big deal about having your own name? I do not get it but then I am lucky I can e mail etc. I am very technologically challenged. Just show me one way to do it and that is it. I use aol and did not even understsand that there were other e mail accounts out there. So let me see if I get it correctly

The reason people are doing this is so they can take their name from one e mail server to the next right? But what I do not get is why does this matter AND if say Jane Doe is an email name of Aol and then she wants of be Jane Doe on gmail she can but how can one differentiate between more than one Jane Doe if they all have the same name.

I know these are probably dumb questions but...

It would be greatly appreciated if anyone else has any invitations if I could receive one. Thank you.

The issue of differentiating between different mailboxs with the same name is just like phone numbers. You can be sure you are not the only person in the country with your 7 digit phone number. What seperates everyone is the area code. With email the difference is what follows the @ sign... such as @ yahoo or @ gmail or @ aol!

Regarding the name of the acccount .... it's simply preference. You want your account to be called what you want, and if you are the first one there, you get what you want. If you are the second one there, you either have to pick something else, or add characters or numbers to make it slightly different.

Hope that helps...

The first person to sign up for JaneDoe@gmail.com will get it. Anyone else who wants that name will be out of luck -- they will have to settle for JaneDoe2@gmail.com or something. That's a big part of the rush to sign up at gmail.

The email system won't be confused between JaneDoe@gmail.com and JaneDoe@aol.com, just as the US mail system isn't confused between "20032 5th Avenue, New York" and "20032 5th Avenue, Los Angeles."

If Jane Doe signs up for JaneDoe@gmail.com and for JaneDoe@aol.com then she will get mail in two different places, the same as if you signed up for two post office boxes.

I hope this makes things clearer!

I just read that Google is cracking down, and they won't allow gmail to be sold on Ebay anymore. I don't know how they'll enforce it; I got my first gmail account on EBay for $2.75, and I thought that was a bargain. I've given out all my invites here, but if I get any more, I'll be glad to continue to pass them along.

If anyone has an extra invite, please count me in.
