Anyone know if any of the restaurants there have a decent gluten free menu? I'm nervous there wont be anything for my mom to eat (she's recently developed an intolerance to it) especially when we're walking around the parks!!

Thanks!

I have a child on the gluten-free diet due to Celiac Disease and Disney always has a chef come out to the table to discuss food options. Make sure to put the allergy information in your advanced dining reservation, so the chef knows you will be coming and can prepare ahead for your mother.

We are so thrilled with how Disney is prepared for our dietary needs. Disney has a complete list of restaurants and foods that they serve with gluten-free manufacturers. Also their chefs go out of their way to please us. Makes us feel so special - in a very good way! :yay::yay::banana::banana:

Disney is the best. My mom needs a gluten free diet, and she always eats very well when she travels to Disney with us. Most counter service locations have gluten free items, just ask to speak to a manager. Keep in mind that it may take a little longer to get your food. My mom always orders separate so my kids can get their food quicker. There are also a lot of snack options throughout the parks/resorts.

I suggest making some ADRs. The chefs are great. In the last year, my mom has enjoyed meals at:

Whispering Canyon Cafe (WCC) - We ate there twice on our last trip. The chefs were very helpful. My mom had the roast chicken and the ribeye - both times with mashed potatoes and veggies.

Chef Mickeys (CM) - We ate there for breakfast. The chef made her Mickey waffles.

Akershus - Princess breakfast - The chef brought out a special platter with waffles, muffins, bread, sausage, and eggs.

Tony's at MK - My mom enjoyed her pasta. She liked her meal better than anyone else.

50's PT - The chef usually has several options. I think my mom gets the pot roast.

Your mom will have a great trip. She will be wanting to go back just for the food.

Your Mom will be fine. As many others have said, there are numerous GF choices. We always make sure that our reservation is noted with the food intolerence to wheat and gluten and then speak with a Chef before every meal. At the Counter Service locations, just ask to speak with a manager, they will oversee the food prep (things like GF Pizza, Hot Dogs/Hamburgers on GF Rolls, Salads, Ribs, Chicken, etc).

Enjoy!:goodvibes

I went to WDW in March with my friend who has Celiac's disease - he loves WDW now!
All the chefs at the table restaurants were OUTSTANDING!
Even the managers at the quick service places were great!
His favorites:
mickey waffles at Kona Cafe
specially made pasta at spoodles
Boma - everything about it! the chef's assistant is married to a man with both a dairy intolerance and celiac's (like my friend) - she made him a special seafood soup from scratch and brought him tons of special things - including his first taste of tofutti! I couldn't believe he hadn't heard of it yet!
Disney did not disappoint.
One of the links on the DISabilities boards has the contact information for the special diet department at Disney - they were very helpful.
even when I made our ADRs, the cast member who answered the phone knew what celiac's disease was! :scared1:

Be forewarned - Universal is not as accomadating.
we had one guy at a counter service place say "Everything has gluten. he can have a salad. that's it."
:sad2:

Yesterday I received the latest allergy-dining documents from Brenda Bennett at SpecialDiets@disneyworld.com We'll be there in two weeks with a multiply-allergic 14yo. Now Brenda automatically emails a document containing suggestions for Epcot sitdown restaurants for those with gluten, dairy, egg and milk allergies! Pretty cool as a starting point (unfortunately dd has a SOY allergy LOL)

If there is a specific food or restaurant your mother might be interested in, Brenda will either send you the ingredient info directly or forward your query to the appropriate park or resort chef. As always, suppliers can change at any point, you need to double-check while at the restaurant, yadda yadda yadda----------but it really helps for planning purposes to know what places might work well for your family or, even more important, what places to eliminate from consideration.

Enjoy!

I would suggest going to the disABILITIES Forum and look at Post #3 of the disABILITIES FAQs. There is a large section in that post dealing with special dietary needs, as well as many related links. You can get directly to the disABILITIES FAQs by following the link in my signature.

This is a very common topic of discussion in the disABILITIES Forum.

I've had more mixed results. People say they ALWAYS see the chef - I've seen one chef - maybe two over what is going on 30 meals at everywhere from California Grill (no Chef) to Boma (no Chef) to Cosmic Rays (see below note on hazzard suits, I don't think they have a chef). I've had some great waiters - I've also had some waiters who haven't understood what I am asking about at all. I've had times when they'd be happy to make me something special, but it will take 30 minutes to cook it. And I don't even bring it up at fast food counters - waiting 20 minutes for a burger isn't my idea of a good time, I'll just take the darn thing off its bun rather than ask for a GF bun and have the kitchen need to don hazzard suits.

Now, I'm not a picky celiac - I'm likely to get gassy and will even choose to risk the discomfort for a bite of my husband's dessert - so I'm not pressing things. I'll tolerate soup thickened with flour and can fend for myself. I know some celiacs who keep seperate toasters at home so they don't get contaminated with bread crumbs.

I'm another -always- seen the chef folks. Although, at CS it's usually a manager. When I special-order at the MK Bakery I've always seen Al (A MK CS Chef) though.

However, all of my ADRs are tagged as "gluten free- celiac" and a flour thickened sauce or a burger taken off the bun would make me miserable for days. So if someone said "I can just take your order" and then couldn't answer questions to my satisfaction - I'd be asking for the chef before I ate whatever came out.

The family joke is that I have a small army of personal chefs who follow me around and do my bidding. It's wonderful, and it's why we keep going back, because I trust Disney to do everything they can to help me not get sick.
