Glucosamine Chondroitin for DOGS

I have a friend in Iowa that makes treats with Glucosomine for dogs. Do a search on Woofables. They ship.

Thanks for the suggestion, but the glucosamine in the treats is 79mg per biscuit. From my calculations (and I could be wrong), my Dog needs around 1500 mg a day. That would be around 20 treats per day. At a cost of $15 for 64 biscuits.

So 64 biscuits would last around 3-4 days....won't work for me, though it may work for lots of others.

We had a 8 or 9 year old lab that had hip dysplasia and that caused chronic swelling. He said some dogs are helped by Glucosamine Chondroitin and some are not. In her case we had to put her on a Nsaid type med. That in turn messed her liver up. Of course he prescribed another med to help protect her liver. I did research and found that its main component was Milk Thistle which you could buy at most stores at a much better cost. In my research I found a pill that was Milk Thistle with Tumeric (which is a wonderful spice that is a natural anti inflammatory.) Swelling is what causes the pain the dogs feel. After starting her on that her liver enzyemes returned to normal. We still had to give her the pain med but not everyday as we had been doing to keep swelling down. So if the glucosamine does not by it self work add some turmeric to see if that helps. Also another common spice that helps with swelling is Ginger.

Labs are notorious for hip displasia-our nearly 11 year old lab doesn't have that but the vet said arthritis is settling in his hips. I get a holistic grain free dog food that has glucosamine/chondroitin in it and it does seem to help. Where did you find the milk thistle /tumeric pill? Wondering if that will help with the inflammation from the arthritis-especially with winter coming on. He has an Nsaid type pill for when he seems to be really hurting too.

Used it for years for my horse in the late 90's/early 00's and felt like it helped him well into his 30's, which is quite old for a horse. Have friends that use dog version and think it works well.

My horse vet (whom I trust more than my own doc) always said that it either works or does nothing. No harm in trying it but if you don't get any positive change in 90-120 days, it probably isn't worth continuing.

In horses, most have gone to an injectable glucosamine cocktail known as Adequan. I use it for current 27 year old horse and swear by it.

Always feels like small animal meds trail far behind equines in joint health.

Got the milk thistle/turmeric pill at a local vitamin store. The brand was "NOW" there was a picture of sun inside the "O" and the bottle is white and the label orange. I know GNC carries milk thistle but not sure about the milk thistle turmeric combo. I think I paid around $15.00 for 60. They were 75 mg and I believe and I gave her 1 a day. I know there are other brands out there though. The turmeric should help with the inflammation and the Milk Thistle will aid in supporting his liver functions. Sometimes if they are on Nsaids long enough their liver enzymes can get out of whack

Thank you! Going looking this weekend! Try to avoid the NSAID unless he really seems to hurt bad...

We've had our 12 yo German Shepherd on GlycoFlex (ultimate) for 2+ years and it's worked so well, we just bought some to give to an older cat with beginnings of arthritis.

GlycoFlex has three levels, the ultimate is the largest dose, and we give her two a day, one with each meal. A two month supply is about $30 on Amazon. We chose this brand because honestly she wouldn't eat any other. She hasn't tired of this one and digs it out of her food to eat first. It did work wonders, but just recently--very recently, the last couple of weeks--she really seems to be struggling with stairs and (ahem) getting on and off the couch. We are considering buffered aspirin.

NOW is a very reputable brand. But, the price can be more than others. Having said that, it is one of my preferred brands.

The Web site IHERB out of Southern California does stock it, and while their prices are good, sometimes you can find it cheaper from a few other vendors. But IHERB ships immediately, like usually the same day, and if you poke around you can usually find a $5 off first order coupon (new customers). Try retailmenot....

Coupon codes are posted by current customers who get a kickback for each new customer they bring in -- that's the only thing I do NOT like about IHERB. And NO I DON'T have a code for you to use. I just think that referral thing is a bit off-putting, but other than that, I like IHERB. They also offer a list of free samples and you can request one or two with each order. They have also been around for a long time and had a pretty good reference library online, where you can check out various issues.

Oh, Swanson Vitamins out of Nebraska sells NOW, I am almost positive. They also might have their own formula, which would probably be significantly cheaper. Swanson is a reputable retailer, but in the past couple of years, seems they have increased their prices a bit. But, their own label products are quite good if they have it...
