Glow Sticks

I've seen a lot of people mentioning buying glow sticks for their trips. Why? There must be something I'm missing.

After dark in the WDW parks kids seem to enjoy playing with anything that lights up or glows. They sell several different kinds of these toys in the WDW gift shops but they are "pricey". One of the most popular are the Disney "Light Catchers" (I think that is the correct name) Anyway, the least expensive of toys in this category is the glow sticks. Most of us "cheapo moms" get them at the dollar stores before we leave home. There are some that are thin and come with connecting pieces so the kids can make bracelets, necklaces and eye glasses.

I usually find myself whipping these out to occupy the kids after we "stake out our spot" and are waiting for the fireworks to begin.

To keep the kids from saying...."Mom, but I want THAT" as the street vendors walk by with their cart of goodies. Those will set you back 10 to 20 dollars! The kids just want something that glows like everyone else has.

I know at parks and fun stuff arond here, they sell one necklace for $5 and people buy them like crazy. I'd much rather buy a bunch and get them for about 30 cents a piece.

They're also great for young kids on dark rides. My neice wore glow bracelets at Disney all day when she was 2 1/2 and loved them in the dark rides, it kept her from being scared. My nephew liked to hold the glow sticks in the dark rides so he could see a little, but unlike a small flashlight, he can't point it at someone else and annoy them.

To give the kids something to do during the hour-and-a-half you are waiting for the parade! We always have extra's to hand out to the kiddies around us (with parents' permission of course)!

We used them for DS (now 9-- used them more when he was 6 and 7) on dark rides at DL and to help to have something to "cling to" and stare at while riding Space Mountain.

If I have extras I give them to a fellow preschool teacher and she makes a fake "campfire" of classroom unit/wood blocks and places the glow sticks tucked under the wood .. with lights off and children all cuddled together on pillows and blankets it does look very much like a campfire for our camping unit!
