What kind of gloves do you guys wear for shooting in the cold? I've typically resorted to just going gloveless, but I think some gloves might be nice this winter. I'm not sure if I should go for something ultra-thin or fingerless.

Hi!

I use a pair of under Armor referee gloves. They are kind of like a football receivers gloves....thin fleece and neoprene like material, so I can handle writing, picking up small objects and 'Shoot' things [Love saying that!!, lol], yet provide some warmth in the wretched cold, lol.

Hope this helps!

Cheers!

There are gloves that are pretty much for photography. They have a way to where you can just expose like the tips of specific fingers. Can't recall the names of the companies that make them though.

Well I've got a decent set of light ski gloves that I used when I was up in Northern Quebec and New England - ski gloves tend to still be pretty flexible - if you get the non-padded variety, and allowed me fine feeling in the grip of the camera, the control wheels, and even feeling the half-press detent on the shutter.

But I can honestly say I've never felt a day so cold in Disney to feel the need for gloves. On the very coldest of cold snaps, short-lived as they are, it might get down to upper 30s during park hours - and that's RARE! You can go in December or January and still end up with 60s. Something I both hate and love about Florida.

Right, but I live in Iowa. I'm less worried about my WDW trip as I am just shooting in the cold this winter.

No problem - I thought you might have just wanted for Disney. The ski gloves have always been good for me as they aren't overly padded and remain very flexible since you need to be able to grab onto the poles - they make them thicker and padded, or much more flexible with a fleece/spandex type of blend - and they work very well for handling cameras, phones, etc with gloves on if you get the middle-to-lightweight variety - about $30 or so. I've been using them for years - on their own for more dexterity, or if you go skiing, they can be used as liners inside heavier padded gloves.

These are like the ones I have:

I wear a thin pair of dollar store gloves underneath a pair of neoprene and rubber work gloves, not the warmest but for $3 it does the trick, I also keep a couple hot paws in my pockets. I shot 7 Santa Claus parades last year and managed to survive with that combo!

I used to wear fingerless gloves but with my hands more sensitive to cold now I'm probably going to have to change that this winter.

I also use fingerless gloves.

I use some cheap gloves I got from Target. The thumb and index finger tips have special thread that allows you to use touch screens even with the gloves still on! They're a typical knit glove, nothing special other than the two finger tips. Works on my iPhone and my Canon touch screen. I plan on taking them to WDW in Dec for the christmas party.

Aside: I think the thread is embedded with silver that makes this work.

I use Coach driving gloves. While thin and maybe not the warmest in below zero weather, They keep the hands sufficiently warm and have outstanding dexterity. I can use all my camera's controls without removing them. If it gets really cold, they will fit inside standard ski type gloves without removing them. This way I can warm my hands and just remove the ski gloves and have full functionality.

I have a pair of North Face Etip gloves. They have the silver tip so you can operate touchscreens with the gloves on. I absolutely love them! When it gets to about -10C here though they tend to get a bit cold. Then I just wear some knitted fingerless gloves on top. That always keeps my hands warm outside.
