Gloves for winter photography?

Wondering if anyone has any special recommendations? I have tried gloves in the past that have dont have the finger tips on them but I still ended up with numb fingers.

I actually also have used mechanics gloves with some success. They covered my whole hands and fingers and the grippy material on the tips made it easy work the camera controls. Though in lower temps they just were not warm enough for me.

I think that Isotoner makes a glove that works with smartphones. while not the same thing, it might be an option. Or do what I did... I moved to Florida!

There really isn't one glove to do it all. You can either have warmth or touch, usually not both. I use driving gloves because I want to work the camera controls. I will keep a second pair of warm gloves near by.

I don't know about that "move to Florida" plan. Our December trip last year had me wearing gloves ALL DAY a couple times! The night photography was really a challenge. I just caved and took them off and stuffed them in my pockets in between as needed. Of course, it helped that I had chemical handwarmers in my pockets!

When we snowshoe up in the White Mts. I use glove liners under my heavy mittens, so when I take my mittens off to use my camera I will still have the liners on. They come in different weights depending on how cold it is. When they aren't enough, which is often, I carry hand and toe warmers in my pack for when my fingers/toes get really cold since its hard to warm them up without them. Stick them in gloves and they will thaw frozen fingers

It would be nice if there was a glove that had like a small pouch on the back that you could insert one of those heat packs into.

Just a thin little glove would do fine. No need for fancy gear. I don't know what they are called but you can get them at walmart for like a dollar a pair.
I guess you could go to an outdoor gear shop and get a nice pair of merino wool gloves. Icebreaker makes a nice one.

I just cut the fingers off my thumb and index finger of the right hand and the thumb of the left off of the knit gloves I get at walmart. Works well for me and only those fingers freeze. But I'm also in Texas and it doesn't usually get ridiculously cold here.

I should have been more specific We moved to Southwest Florida. It is typically about 10-15 degrees warmer than WDW in the winter. We feel like we are going up north when going there.

I found some that are the fingerless with a mitten fold over-basic polar fleece material. I did have to trim the top off the thumb but they worked well through fallball for me and my left hand stayed quite warm since I could keep the mitten cover on most of the time

The surface of the palm is just grippy enough to get a good hold on my camera gear. And the grips are glow in the dark as well. Haven't found a practical function for that yet, but its pretty cool.

I am going to combine these with some flip mitt mittens and those small hand warmers. Should be good to go. I know that sounds like overkill but I sometimes go out when its 10 degrees out.

How much time will you spend in the cold? Living in Florida, I really don't have many times that I need gloves. However, I tried it today by taking my camera & tripod to ICE! at the Gaylord Palms resort. They keep the temp there about 9 degrees.

I tried a number of different things, but I ended up just taking off the right glove when I needed to change a setting and then putting it back on to warm up my hand again. It worked well enough, though it was a bit tedious at times.

Of course, that's a controlled environment with no wind. Your mileage may vary.

Well, I meant per photo outing. In other words, how much time do you need to spend with your camera in the cold per session? Would it be a major problem to take off your gloves for the time you need to adjust the settings and put them back on when you're moving from one place to the next?
