Former college basketball coach Don Haskins had been approached before about doing a movie on his 1966 Texas Western team, the first to win a national title with five black starters.

But when Walt Disney Pictures came to him a few years ago, Haskins did not hesitate. "I always liked their movies and I thought they were movies kids could watch," said Haskins, who coached 38 years at the school now known as the University of Texas at El Paso.

The movie, "Glory Road," will star Ben Affleck as Haskins. Filming is tentatively scheduled to begin this year. Haskins, 74, said he simply picked the best players for the team that beat Kentucky's heavily favored -- and all-white -- basketball powerhouse 72-65.
I'm starting to sense a trend here, Remember the Titians, Miracle, and now Glory Road. I wonder how long this trend will last before diminishing box office returns kill it.

I can't wait till Disney does a flik about the World Series between the Cubs & Red Sox. Oh wait, that would be a fantasy flik, not a documentary.

Maybe Michael Moore could do it ....

:p

If it is well done than I don't think the "trend" issue shouldn't
hurt it, both of those movies mentioned are great sports
flicks and "Glory Road" has the storyline to be just as good.

So much for Ben Affleck's part in the film:
The 31-year-old actor has dropped out of playing the lead in Disney's "Glory Road," according to The Hollywood Reporter.

The project centers on Texas Western coach Don Haskins, who led the first all-black college basketball team to the NCAA national championship in 1966.

Affleck's profit-sharing arrangement for the film prompted Affleck's departure. "Glory Road" is set to start shooting in less than a month, causing the studio to scramble to find a replacement. Sources say that Josh Lucas ("Sweet Home Alabama") is a front runner.

Affleck isn't hurting for cash though. The actor recently nabbed $356,400 in Commerce Casino's California State Poker Championship. He next stars opposite Christina Applegate in "Surviving Christmas," which will be released in November.
