Giving your kids social security number

I do not give DS SS# to anyone. The first time it gets out in the world will be when he gets his first job. Which is what it is for. Tax purposes. The only time I have ever been asked for it was at the ER. I said it wasn't mine to give. They said they needed it for insurance. I said I would take it up with the insurance company. Never heard another word about it and the claim was promptly paid. Guess they didn't need it after all.

I won't give my child's but I have to give my DH's. His SSN is our policy number, ugg. (we are military and his SSN is tied to everything.)

Good info here - never thought about the schools not needing it - I think I put it on every form that asks for it - Thanks for enlightening me!

I never ever give out my kids social security number. Ever. When I registered my daughter for school, they wanted it, and I refused. The school secretary told me they NEEDED it. Why? I asked "Because there is a blank space on the form for it" she told me. :confused3 Sorry, thats not a reason. LOL

I have also refused to give it at the doctors office, and was given an equally ignorant answer. They claim to need it for insurance purposes, and when I pointed out that they had her insurance company id number, and that would suffice, that was the end of it.

The only person I have ever given it to is our CPA, and only because I wont' get to use the kid as a deduction without doing so!

I've had people ask for our DS's number and I won't give it to them and sometimes the person gets mad, at that point I remind them that SS #'s are not a form of ID and that minors aren't required to show ID. I offer to give them mine or DH's but they usually end up saying that they don't really need a number

I realize you didn't ask this but IMO dr's and hospitals are asking for #'s of minors more and more b/c they want all of their health related info linked to them by SS# so when unviersal health care is made mandatory for all citizens the govt will have everything it needs to catagorize people according to health risks A dr's office recently asked my DS if he wears his seatbelt all the time, what physical activities he's in, and etc, questions that had nothing to do with the reason DS was there. The questions didn't last long until I interrupted and told the nurse to direct all of the questions to me, the questioning stopped at that point, go figure . Please no flaming, that's jmo, no one has to agree

 Funny, my country has universal health care and I never have to give my SIN (same as SSN) at the hospital. Quite frankly, why would they need to "categorize anyone"?

I frequently chit-chat with Dr's, whats the big deal with his questions? What nefarious plan could the Dr have with the knowledge that your son uses a seat-belt?

I know in CA we ask for it on registration forms for state testing reasons. I for one still don't provide that info on my child, and I am an Office Manager in a k-8 school.

The private school applications I've completed for my kids always had a blank for SSNs; and I've always put "will provide if accepted." If they weren't accepted, then the schools didn't have it in their files in perpetuity; and if they were accepted, the school office could ask me for it when they needed it. DS9 is going on his 4th year at his school; and the office staff at his school never asked me for it again.

Ok, I know it is off topic but why in the heck wouldn't you want your son answering questions the nurse asks him? Are you planning on going on job interviews with him too? You should be happy your dr's office takes a holistic approach to medicine. What is wrong with promoting healthy habits? :confused3

I would be grateful to a DR who asked my child general safety and health questions. My Dr isn't just responsible for the particular issue that brought me to their office that day but to my general health as a whole. What a great Dr to care so much about your son.:thumbsup2

How old is your son. Mine is 9 and I always want him to answer questions posed directly to him by adults when we are together. They asked him, not me.

I don't understand the issue either- every year at my daughters annual physical since she has been able to speak the Dr will addressthe questiosn to her, and I prefer it that way. She is very comfortable talking to the Dr and answering questions regarding her own health and safety. They do ask her if she wears a bike helmet, seat belt and what herdiet contains etc- I see no reason they should ask a parent those questions rather than that child.
You know darn well that when asked those question the parent would answer with the answer the Dr wanted to hear rather than the truth anyway!
