Giving Tips...The Physical Act of

we noticed a couple of tables missing couples we have to wonder if these same people stilffed the room steward too we cant beileve a table of 18 would do that of course the servies would be alittle off with that many people but no reason to still just to save money we are loking forward to our first 7 night western magic

I should quit replying to this post...but with the discussion of truck drivers and others in "non-tipping" positions....

It's never wrong to do something to thank any person or group of people who do something special for you.....

I'm reminded of a trucker who stopped and helped me change a tire on the way to my first job interview many years ago. He was sweet, and commented that he always hesitated to stop because of the nastiness that went on "on the road," but somehow I'd reminded him of his wife back home and he always hoped someone would stop and help her if she ever needed it. I can't thank him in person....but that sure makes up for the times someone tailgates or cuts me off!

When I had scheduled surgery, I tucked 3 big boxes of candy into my suitcase for the various nursing shifts. Hospital personnel always appreciate food! Ok, not the ones on diets, but.....again, these are not tipped people, but a little rememberance is nice.

I like the idea of phone cards for the counsellors in the kid programs...again, just a little something to say thanks. I'd much rather buy a phone card for a counsellor than an arcade card that my kid doesn't need (hee hee!)

The real idea in non tipping positions is to just take a minute to say "thanks for making my cruise special." If it is accompanied by something tangible, that's nice. It's also been my "thing" to write a letter to DCL (or someone's employer) if someone does a special job. It's nice to thank them, better to have a positive review in their personnel file!

Maybe I'm just tired tonight, but I feel that just because I was asking how to physically get my tip to the server if I'm not at dinner has turned into people assuming I'm not going to give a tip. I do hope that's not how people were reading my op. The simple fact that I was asking what to do meant that I cared to do the right thing. And for the record, I cannot think of the last time I gave less than 20%. What goes around, comes around and when I am treated with respect, I give my servers the respect and gratitude that they deserve. With everyone's comments over the past year, I cannot wait to meet my servers. Anyway, if I was offended without cause, I apologize, but let's all be a little careful to judge others....just because my table might be empty that last night doesn't mean that I'm not tipping.

Thanks again everyone.

I definitely didn't take your op that way. I think -- like many posts on the DIS -- that one topic leads to another than to another and before you know it, we're discussing the type of toilet paper used in the bathrooms onboard. ;) I guess we have a tendency to go off on tangents! LOL

PPPHHHHEEEEWWW (sigh of relief)....here I was feeling guilty about something I didn't do. I'm sure I am tired. It's been a long first day of this wonderful new year!!!

just like others we didnt take your post as you were not going to tip your asking chowed your consern as others said and you will see postings on the dis boards always seem to lead to one thing from another enjoy your cruise

kcashner,
A good way to show your gratefulness for being helped by a truck driver is to let a trucker into your lane when they are trying to get over and everyone keeps cutting them off. I always do that in honor of my brother the truck driver. ;)
BuzzBoyMom,
I think (hope) everyone understood what you meant by your query. It was a good, valid question! We almost always skip breakfast because we like to get an early start, and there have been plenty of times when we skipped the last dinner, too, because we used to go to Palo instead of Parrot Cay. We would make it a point to go to the diningroom during early dining or after dinner was over to give out the tips, but I'm sure our tablemates could have thought that we didn't tip at all. There are many people who don't tip, but also many who do and who just don't do it at the traditional time. Don't worry about people taking it wrong...yours was a good question that might help others in the same situation.
